First of all, I was wondering if you can start the adoption process (sign on with an agency), before you get your homestudy done. I am wondering this b/c there is a decent chance we will be relocating to another home (and possibly across the state) in the next couple of years, but we would like to start the process because it takes so long.

Secondly, If we don't relocate, I am actually super worried that our current home would not pass inspection b/c it is over 100 years old. A lot of work has been done on it and it is a nice home, but the window are as old as the house. They are not combination windows and alot of them are painted shut, which we could fix...but I'm still worried. The ones upstairs in the bedrooms are all able to be opened for fire escapes, at least.
Also, We have only 2 bedrooms but we use the landing on the top of our stairs as our sons nursery, so basically it's like we have 3. If we adopt we would move our son into the 2nd bedroom and use the landing/nursery for the new baby. I am worried that this will not fly with the inspectors.

I need some honest advice/opinions, please.

Welcome to the board.
Your homestudy is only good for one year so it is best to do it when you are close to adopting. Typically, it is only good for the state that you are adopting in and the home that you are going to bring the child to. So, considering all that you are thinking, I would say wait.
It depends on the state what will fly with the homestudy. We had to have the fire dept come and that would not have worked. I don't think a landing would ever pass as a nursery but who knows. I would talk to adoption agencies, they are pretty frank about stuff like this.
good luck

Thanks for your response. I guess I will do some investigating.
Do you know if they want you to have a bedroom for each child or are they okay with kids sharing bedrooms.

It's kind of frustrating that hospitals send newborns home with horrible parents who live in horrible conditions all the time and there is nothing they can do about it, but if you are willing to pay thousands of dollars to adopt a child who would otherwise have no home, they make you jump through so many hoops just to prove that you are "worthy"...

IDK about the home study checking the rooms, but our home is 105 yrs old and no one checked windows or whatnot. We are doing our second home study now with the same guy. I know if ANYTHING changes, you have to update (pay too) your home study. So if you move, add or subtract someone living with you, or change income or jobs. You can sign up with an agency first, you just won't be shown to BM's that are in the hospital delivering. Our home study is also good for 2 yrs and any state, so IDK if that's the agency you choose or the state you are in. HTH.

You can PM me if you have any questions on the adoption stuff
