I've been so totally wrapped up and overwhelmed in my journey since Novemeber I've been MIA. Just a quick update, we are well into the process of adoption now. On Nov. 9th we met our son for the first time...then we did home checks and paperwork out the wha-zoo. Finally in January of 2011 we got our Interstate paper work done so we could get things moving between KY and OH. Last weekend was our second visit with our son. He's severely autistic and hyperactive but I couldn't imagine having it any other way now. He is the most precious and beautiful child I've ever seen in my entire life. I AM IN LOVE! (Hubby is pretty smitten with little man too). On 2/12 we have another visit and will get to keep him overnight for the first time and then the visits should start taking place on our home turf. God is so GREAT AND WONDERFUL!!!
Oh I am so glad you've updated!! I've so been wondering about you guys! Please let us know how the overnight visit goes. Have you been able to find some support systems for you and him in your community? I think that has been the most helpful for me having an autistic son. I need people to ask about where to go to get this thing and such.
I agree with SarahBethsMommy. Having a support system is key when having a child with any disability. If you haven't found anything yet check out Do something, Learn something, Share something, Change something - Meetup. I found an awesome meetup group in my area of parents with a child with autism on there and they have been the most helpful.
Congrat's on everything and I hope the transition goes smoothly for you and your little guy.
There's actaully two groups close I am involved with, one for adoption and one strictly for autism. There are also quite a few autie kids in my community and I am working on a local support group for them. I have also started a small boutique hand crafting things for autism (pins, magnets, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, stickers, etc.) to help with travel expenses and for things he will need when he gets here (making a safer fenced in back yard, etc). I'm really impressed though. They talked to us like he was a complete veg and on our visit we realized he's wayyy smarter than they gave him credit for. He learned to change the tv channels by hand and REMOTE (never watched a tv before), knew where treats were hidden in the hotel room, learned to unlock the door...scary (any suggestions there? Thats the only thing that makes me nervous about the overnight visit in a hotel...
They sell door alarms that go into the door and if it is opened without it being disarmed, it sends out a loud high pitched squeal. I'd use those in the hotel. At home, you might try a keyed deadbolt on all outside doors. Lock them all and keep the key in your pocket all the time.
Well, it's time for the update! The visit was a COMPLETE SUCCESS! He is very comfortable with us and has established us as mommy and daddy. We were able to get all of his medicines into him and he was a perfect angel for the most part. He did have several small tantrums when his medicines started wearing off and he has two new teeth coming in (and I'm sure they HURT!). His medicines transformed him from hyperactive and unmanagable to being an almost normal child! He was unable to go to stores and only slept 2-3 hours a night. We took him to a Meijer, Wal-Mart, K-Mart and a few other stores and a MUSEUM. All without incident! He went to sleep at 7:30 pm and was out until 6:30 am! I couldn't believe how well he behaved, truly amazing. Hoping next weekend he will be coming home with us for the weekend!
