Well --- this is a long story but I'm going to try and keep it as short as possible.

My DHs grandparents got legal custody of his 3 cousins a few years ago. His grandmother has since passed away and his grandfather has given custody to his sister because he had a stroke and needed the help. His sister is almost 60 and between the 3 kids (17, 15, 11), her brother, and her own dad I think she's getting stretched really thin and the oldest is starting to get under her skin with his behavior. We have always been a back-up when it came to their custody and she has started to talk about us taken the 17 year old. We won't be able to get him until Thanksgiving (when we'll be there anyway) and it's not even a for sure thing. I'm just really wondering what will it take for us to take custody of him and how long of a process will it be. He will be 18 in December so we don't have a large time window.

I'm really lost and don't know what to do.

Thanks for listening

Wow, that sounds like a tough situation. I don't have much advice except to check the laws of your state to see how that would all work. I wish you the best!

You'de have to check out state regs. Most things with the state take a pretty long time, though. Also, in many states, children over the age of 12 also get a say in what they want.
