I'm still just in the researching phase of adopting. Today I spoke with a local agency and she said that a lot of families come up with creative ways to get the money together... car washes, asking family, etc. I'm curious to know how you were able to come up with the money for your adoption/s if you are willing to share? As I'm sure it is with most adopting families the financial thing is a big hurdle for us. I'm having a hard time getting my dh to ever look seriously at adoption because of the money involved.

The state provided our attourney's money and we had saved money to put towards the different fees in the adoption process.

We were fortunate that we had money saved for our fees and then we put our travel expenses (which were a big part of our total expense) on credit cards and paid them off with our tax credits. I know there are some great ideas out there for raising money and I see blogs all the time where people are having auctions, raffles, bake sales, garage sales and all manner of other types of fundraising. Good luck!!

I am having an aneurysm as we speak trying to figure out how we will pay for our adoption. I think it depends on whether you are adopting from a foster system, internationally or domestically - the costs vary greatly.
We are adopting internationally and it will probably cost about 40K. I have heard a ton about fundraising but it would take ALOT of car washes to raise 40K. I think one of the best options is savings or home equity lines of credit. If you don't have savings, there are several loan programs available at higher interest rates. Either way, it is a lot of money and should take some planning.

We didn't! We adopted domestically through the foster care system. It was 100% paid for by the state. In fact we receive a monthly "child support" type payment from the state to help care for our kids....

We adopted through the state foster care system and did not need to pay anything for it. We also asked family for a loan if we went through another agency. We would have paid them back with the money from the adoption tax credit.

Because our adoption is family oriented and private it's only going to cost us around three thousand and thankfully we have that saved up.

I'm just lurking here right now. My dh and I recently lost our baby boy and are thinking about adopting in the future. I've worried about the costs too and done a lot of research. There are a lot of organizations out there who offer grants toward the cost of adoption and you can get some low to no interest adoption loans too. Go to www.adoption.com and click adoption. There is a link to loans. There's a lot of good information there. Hopefully we will be able to make a decision in the spring when we are in a better place emotionally and I might be joining you ladies here.

Everything paid thru the State for us too. First we had him as a foster child. Hopefully, adoption will be final in Feb. 2008.

When we were looking a an agency to do a domestic adoption we were going to take a loan out for $15K and re-pay it through money I would get at work for adoption re-imbursement and the tax credits.
