My grand-daughter who is now 2 1/2 years old was diagnosed with SOD when she was about 4 months old. Since then she has been working with various specialist for therapy. My husband and i were awarded custody of her this past March and have been working with her daily as well as her therapists. She has a PT, Speech and Early Intervention (From the School for the Deaf and Blind in South Carolina). Although she has been progressing very well in most areas, we are having a problem with feeding.
At the present, she will not eat table foods. She only wants baby food. She has a texture issue and has a very sensitive gag reflex. I have tried many different things and nothing is working. She does not do finger foods. She will only smash things in her hands and then wants it removed from her hands. She will not put it in her mouth on her own. Some items such as dry cereal, crackers, cookies, etc. she will pick up and eat on her own. However, if I try to give her table food (even if I smash it up some), she gags and does not want to eat it. Also, she will not feed herself. If I help her with a spoon. I can sometimes get her to take bits, but if I let go of the spoon, she let's go of it as well.
