Hello. We welcomed DD#2 into our family on December 18. A week later, she had one eye diagnosed with lack of a red eye reflex due to a cataract.

Does anyone have any experience with going through a newborn/infant cataract surgery? I'm also curious as to the follow-up procedures. It's a bit overwhelming to think of my tiny baby girl wearing either contacts or glasses at this stage in her life.

An update on our journey ... Seven weeks old and having her first eye surgery ...

The congenital cataract was confirmed by the pediatrician, the ophthalmologist, and the optical surgeon. Surgery is scheduled for the first week of February to remove the lens of the eye and the cataract. A contact lens will be fit for her eye the following week.

On a more positive note --- I have found some resources that others might benefit from.

Little Four Eyes (babies, toddlers, and young kids in glasses) - little four eyes | babies, toddlers, and young kids in glasses <-- Also on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/littlefoureyes/)
Infant Contacts 101 - Infant Contacts 101 : Eye Power Kids Wear

There is also a book for kids about this condition - Samantha Wears a Contact Lens and Patch… JUST LIKE YOU! by Juliette Vignola. There is a companion book about a boy named Jack with a similar story.

Surgery was a success! Next step is to get a contact lens fitted this week. I look forward to her being able to see with both eyes.
