Fat Tuesday if I translate literally. It is when a lot of people a glutenous because they are about to enter a time of fasting and preparation for Easter (called Lent). It is also celebrated as a longer event in some parts of the world, there it is called Carnival. Traditionally Catholic areas (New Orleans was once upon a time French, so traditionally Catholic) are more likely to have a higher celebration of it. Normally I just say "Whatever," but this year we are going to a fancy meal (with my mom and my family) for some fun!
I was born in Baton Rouge and would go to Mardi Gras all the time!!! I now live in Bryan, TX and I miss Louisiana so much!! If you havent been to Mardi Gras (real Mardi Gras in New Orleans) you must go! It is one of those events that many people say "oh its dirty and gross" but after the first time, you'll fall in love!! Every Feb (when mardi gras starts) they mass produce millions of King Cakes; its a cake thats an oval type shape, has icing on top (melted) and tons of sprinkles in order: purple green and gold (the colors of mardi gras) There is also a little plastic baby- it used to come with the baby inside the cake and the person who found it in their piece of cake had to bring the king cake to the party next year, but with all the little kids choking on them, they took them out and put them on top the cake so when you get it you have to put it into the cake and let others find it.
You have to go to Bouron St. Thats where the BEST parades are! You cheer and scream and yell "throw me something mr." if your lucky, you'll go home with thousands of beads which they throw from the floats. So if you go be prepared for CRAZINESS! But it is so much fun! You have to be careful though because sometimes the beads come at you so fast, one year when I was about 8 years old, a guy on one of the floats was giving away big white beads and everyone wanted them so he threw them and they hit me right in the face, gave me a black eye for about week. But its just fun and excitment.
Theres parades for the little ones and adult parades. Its not the most clean time though, you'll see alot of drunks and girls tend to lift up their shirts, show their boobs and get huge beads but thats what Mardi Gras has become. You can stay away from that. That mostly happens Fat Tuesday (Which is the last night of mardi gras and the craziest, its supposed to be the last night of partying and craze before easter and good friday) so if you go fat tuesday expect lots of boobs being shown. But I suggest to everyone to try and visit once in your life. Its something youll never forget! (:
Hope this helps!!!
