The very first time I make something I follow the recipe. After I get comfortable with it...it's just general stuff that's followed...then I add what I want. LOL!

If it is my own recipe I make it myself, but if its a box, i follow instructions. if it is something new to me i follow instructions the first time, then i play around with it till i find my own way to make it "better"

Depends on what I'm making. If it's something new I use a recipe the first couple times but after that I usually get the hang of it. Sometimes I make up my own recipes, those aren't always the best
