I don't buy any large item right away. We always shop around and do a little research to find the best deal.
On the little things I literally ask myself "do I need it? is it a want or need?" and then go from there. I know it seems kinda silly but it works for me

We do basically the same. And I keep a running list of all bigger non-immediate needs, and wants, and keep an eye out for bargains on those things.
