I rarely carry cash. But when I do, I prefer to carry big bills. It just discourages me from spending because I don't want to deal with all the change that comes with it. You end up with all these small bills and coins everywhere. Just a mess to me. But if I'm trying to limit my spending for a period of time, I'll pull out cash and just use that. Otherwise I prefer my card. Helps me keep better track of my money.
I used to spend less when I carried cash. It has gotten better now that we have really gotten into budgeting and being accountable for where every cent goes. In the past, it did help, though. Now, we don't carry too much cash.
I pretty much only use cash for stuff like garage sales, fast food, and random purchases under $10. Everything else seems to go on our credit card to earn cash back. It takes a lot of self-discipline to not overspend when you use your credit card all the time, but my husband and I are pretty good about it.
