My sil gave me a mess of tomatoes. A huge shopping bag full of them. So I made a batch of chunky veggie style spaghetti sauce. Canned it for later eating. Also had enough tomatoes left for a batch of salsa. Well I had some jalapeno's and other stuff I got at the farmers market. I had some canning jars around the house from when I did jam last fall. I figured we'd never eat all those tomatoes within a week. They'd go bad and or we'd be sick of eating tomatoes in that time. This way I got something for later eating. Last year fall. I made a mess of plum jam. Turned out great. We have a plum tree that grows on the property line. Most of it hangs in our yard. It produced an over abundance of plums. I hate to see food go to waste. Actually I have the plum tree, a dorf bing cherry tree and a apple tree we just planted a year ago. I figure it's one way to be frugal on food costs. One summer the cherry tree gave us buckets of cherries. I'm waiting for the apple tree to start producing apples. Oh not to mention the rasberry bush I planted last summer also. It's alive yet. But has not produced any berries yet.

I do, more for getting fresh healthy foods yearround than the frugality of it. I didn't get much this year because my garden sucked. I did get raspberry jam(which I'm giving as Xmas gifts) and peaches.
