Sometimes, what they don't know, won't kill them, right? Are there things you do to help your family save money that you don't mention to them? Are there ways you cut corners to save costs, but everyone else thinks you're doing it the old way? Tell us your frugal secrets!

What frugal activities do you keep underwraps from your family?

I'll be the first to confess. I refill their name brand laundry soap bottle with generic or a loss leader I got for nearly free. I put it in the small concentrated bottle so they only use half (we have softened water, if you use it all, you have bubbles in your laundry room). I post and learn here at JM, but I don't mention any specifics ... wouldn't want to give up our trade secrets, right? I hide vegetarian meat replacement in sauces instead of regular meat because TVP is cheaper, and they won't eat it if they know it's not 'real'. And, probably my worst ... I always tell my DH I spent the whole amount he gave me for groceries, even if I never do. Then, I tuck away the extra saved. He already thinks I cut the bill down a lot, so I win all around.

Who's next in the confessional?

No, I don't really have anything I do that's sneaky like that. DH doesn't care what kind of products we use and Alisha is still too young to care. In fact, I've stepped away from my frugal ways just a bit as of late. I had gotten a free sample of Snuggle fabric softener and I realized just how nice is to have such soft, fresh-smelling towels. So since I had a coupon, I went ahead and bought some. But I still use the cheap Purex detergent and only use the Snuggle on the half of the laundry that doesn't contain the baby's clothes. I am still cheap after all!

Well, while I've been participating in the monthly grocery challenge, saving money each month (down to saving $60 this month!!!), I've been keeping the extra money and stashing it into savings. He has no idea.

MandiK, you crack me up! DH is too brand-loyal for me to be sneaky, and he goes shopping with me, so that doesn't happen here.

Oh no no, I don't take Ben shopping with me. I tried that once, yes only once, and never again. He gets cranky when I compare the price per ounce for things, as it requires time and a calculator, so I leave him at home. The only downside to that is we don't have joint accounts so I have to wait for his check to clear my account. Hmmmm, perhaps he should get a debit card with my name on it ... perhaps I'll go work on that right now ... haha.
