I was so excited to try Kim's lemon chicken today. I put it in the crockpot around 1 and then did some stuff around the house. Well, I just checked on it, and guess which dummy forgot to TURN IT ON! Now, I not only do not get to have delicious chicken for dinner tonight and I have to come up with something else at the last minute, I ruined a perfectly good chicken!

I'm good at turning it on, but forgetting to plug it in! Sorry you can't have the chicken.

Not me - no way! It was still partially frozen when I got it out of the fridge, so I defrosted it the rest of the way in the microwave and it had been sitting out for 3 1/2 hours. I checked the FDA website, and it said that you can leave it out for up to 4 hours, but if it has been defrosted in the microwave to use it immediately as some parts of it will be partially cooked and warm and the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Besides, we had a really bad case of food poisoning a couple years ago, and I would do anything to never repeat that again. The chicken was only about 3.00 - I might be cheap, but it's still not worth the risk to me!

Yeah, I wouldn't want to risk it. I won't even defrost meat by just leaving it out on the counter like I know some people do. I defrost it in the refrigerator which takes a long time but I feel much safer.

I live dangerously I totally break the rules on stuff like that. I'll even eat certain leftovers that were left out overnight... The only time I've gotten food poisoning was when I bought fresh salsa from the deli at Giant (the one by where I used to live) and ate it immediately after buying it. Man was I sick! We seriously considered taking me to the ER it was so bad. I never ate their salsa again after that. I don't even put toilet paper on public toilet seats. Bad Heather bad.

I got food poisoning after eating TGIFridays. I haven't been back since. But we are going tomorrow, lol. I got it when I was pregnant with Anastasia so it was terrible. I DID have to be hospitalized for a while because I was so dehydrated and I was throwing up blood because I had nothing else to throw up. I really wanted Chris to kill me and put me out of my misery at the time.

Heather .... I'm probably with you. I'd have to see if it smelled funny. If not, cook away little chicken. I don't put paper on public toilets either. And, I eat pizza that's been left on the counter overnight. Perhaps it's the college kid in me, idk.

Yeah I don't put paper on public toilets and I do eat pizza that was left out..but uncoked chicken, defrosted in the microwave left out for hours upon end? That's getting pitched.

*shrug*

I figure so long as the meat reaches a thorough internal temperature well above that of poultry cooking standards, which it will if you cook it through in a crock pot, that I'm alright. I don't blame you for feeling differently, though. I'm finicky about some things ... that just isn't one of them.
