I have a question i've been pondering for a while here...
Does the register know if i bought that product to let me use the coupon?? OR is the coupon just an amount off code and have nothing to do with what i bought?? I was wondering this.. Co can i use coupons for things i didn't buy and get the credit...
I don't think so.. But then again how dose the register know... ( I'm sure it's illegal but curiosity got the best of me)
Yes, it is illegal, but most registers do know. I've heard that there are a couple of stores where the register doesn't match it up, but most do match at least the brand. I think in a lot of cases it's the cashiers responsiblity to make sure that the actual product matches, but the register does usually match the brand.

Most registers know... some don't. I've used a 1.50 huggies diapers coupon for huggies goodnites pants, and it works, but it's because the UPC is still matching up with the beginning UPC of the coupon...
Some do not know at all. A few weeks ago I was at Meijers. I went through the self check out and I had 2 orders. All of the coupons scanned fine. When I was looking at the recipt I noticed that stupid me scanned the wrong coupon on one order. There register said nothing about me not only using a coupon for an item that I did not buy, but I also had 4 coupons for 3 item. Everything worked out the same because the coupon was suppose to go on the other order.

Ditto to what April said about Meijer. I handed the cashier a stack of coupons and when she got to the last one I noticed it was one I meant to take out of the stack because I didn't end up getting the product. She scanned it before I could say anything and the register took it. She was able to void it when I told her though.
The register seems to know if you bought that item, or a similar item, and how much of the item that you bought... more or less. If the item is similar to what you have the coupon for... the coupon doesn't seem to match up for the # of items. Well, that is all I know about the whole "matching up" things.

Thanks for all the responses this has been one he the odd things that i've though wondered... and if i'd ask a cashier they'd think i was trying to steal things... So thank you answering my curiosity question..
I just noticed on todays receipt that when a coupon was scanned it actually had the name brand of coupon as the description...it used to just say "scanned coupon".....I thought that was different. So I guess the registers are getting smarter.
