The dumpster that we usually go to is getting full up to just the right height and there were papers galore. I would've spent longer but Alisha was screaming poor DH's ear off in the car. So I ended up with three inserts-- one of them being from several weeks ago with mostly expired ones. Do they have to save them forever before they toss them?

There are several scattered around here. Most are in strip mall parking lots. We also have a few just on the side of the road over by the library. And even some down near a dock on a lake. They have ones for newspaper, cardboard, aluminum, and clothes.

As long as they don't have a sign posted that says you can't do it, just assume that you can. There's no one even around when I do it and I'm only there for 5 minutes anyway. If anyone saw me, they'd probably just think I was putting in my own newspaper which I do--- before I do my dumpster diving.

You should check it out. I just wish they had some within walking distance so I could spend more time on my excursions.

You're not going to be on private property when it's a parking lot.

if the property has any type of security company doing patrols -- the company can issue a criminal trespass, warnings, arrests--- hubby does patrols at three supermarket plazas plus complexes with large dumpsters-- it maybe a public place but it still owned privately and its still technically stealing.

It's not stealing. Once something enters a trashcan on a curb or a dumpster the person who owned it before has relinquished their rights to it. It's how police sometimes get around having to have a warrant for someones DNA. They pick up the trash once the person sets it on the curb and comb through it for hair, etc.

It's not criminal trespass until they've issued you a warning and THEN you go back. They can't just automatically arrest you. Also, if it's a place where people are encouraged to go and put their papers IN the bin, they technically can't do that--they'd have to start issuing warnings to everyone! What would be the sense in that?

I always grab all the plastic bags that some idiots use even though it says, "NO BAGS" on the dumpster. That way when someone does ask me what I'm doing (it's happened a couple times--once it was the president of the association, since the dumpster is in the community center parking lot), I just tell them, "getting coupons and taking some of this plastic out that has no business being here in the first place." They always seem satisfied with that, and leave me alone.

It's not stealing. It's in a dumpster, therefore no one has ownership over it any longer.

Kim, I noticed the plastic bags in the dumpster yesterday. Are they morons or what? There's a big sign that says "newspaper only". Duh. Not only do these people not use coupons, they're illiterate as well.

It really makes me mad finding all those bags. Ours says both "newspaper only" and "no bags" but these people still don't get it!!

I had this big answer brewing, and then I saw Kim's ... and she took the words right out of my mouth. Ditto the public domain, ditto Sarah's police reference, ditto needing a warning. It's only trespassing when you do it AGAIN. LOL. Like, if I walk through my neighbor's backyard and they say, "Hey, get off my lawn!" I'm not trespassing if I obey. I'm trespassing when I flip them the bird and keep walking.

I dare any rent-a-cop out there to attempt issuing me a "ticket" for "trespassing". Ha. He better call the real police, we're going to need them.
