I'm so in! I haven't won a challenge in a few months, and that is about to change. Hold onto your socks, ladies.

Marking my spot.

So, I imagine you ladies have a lot of newbies at the beginning of each year, hopefully, but the end of 2008, I'll still be here. DH and I had the "we need to save" conversation again.... tonight. Our baby is nearly 20 months old, and her savings is pretty sad. So, I'm going to jump in here. I'm going to shoot high because I really have no idea how much I spend. I'm going to set a 75$ per week goal. Wow, that's 375$ Geez. But it seems everytime I go to the grocery store, it's another 75$.

*FOR THE PURPOSES OF THIS PARTICULAR TEMPLATE, THE WEEKS ARE:

WEEK ONE: Jan. 1-5
WEEK TWO: Jan. 6-12
WEEK THREE: Jan. 13-19
WEEK FOUR: Jan. 20-26

Good luck!!

WEEK ONE

So, I did stick very closely to my budget this week. I got blind sided by a sale on boneless skinless chicken breasts and I just couldn't resist buying it. I have enough to last a few months. Also, I shop at a pricier store for several reasons. It's close to my house, it has a great reputation of being a good employer. They have real grocery baggers, they take your groceries out to the car for you, they have a great organic section and...... a tot spot with a CPR certified first aid trained attendant.

spent: 83.31

total amount saved in specials, rebates, and coupons: 32.01

WEEK TWO
I hate Wal-Mart. I learned years ago that when I shop there, I spend at least double what I expect. I had a very short grocery list this week. I had hoped to come in under budget, but no, it didn't happen. I spent just as much at Wal-Mart than I usually do at my normal grocery store. I went because I had a 5$ coupon for the fresh-matic lysol thingy, which Wal-Mart turned out not to have, and DH wanted deli meat, which I assumed was cheaper at Wal-Mart, but I think the cost savings is just a few pennies, especially considering I had to wait in line 20 minutes to get the meat. My normal grocery store has a touch screen computer you punch your deli order in on and then continue shopping, picking up your meat at the end of your trip. Grocery shopping, even with Tater, takes me about 45 minutes. Going to Wal-Mart, 2 hours! Of course, I did choose to go on a Saturday night, which was not smart on my part.

Ok, I'm back in the game. I've been focused on our budget, but I always do so horribly with the food part of it, that I don't want to post it here. Haha.

I have a food budget of $300 for the month. I know I'll never win the challenge, but I just hope to come in at budget.

WEEK ONE
spent: $91.04
total amount saved in specials, rebates, and coupons: didn't jot it down

I think I did pretty good in week one. I created my menu for the week, bought the stuff for the week. We went to a friend's house to watch the Steeler's game, and went quickly to the grocery store before going over and bought stuff that we normally wouldn't buy. Also, since DH was with me, we bought more. That's why I go alone. Hehe. But, the stuff he did buy was on sale.

WEEK TWO
spent: $85.87 (including a $24 trip to the Chinese food place because I was deathly ill this week. DH got me wonton soup and some noodle dish for me to eat. Yummy yummy, but eats our budget.
total amount saved in specials, rebates, and coupons: $21.50 - coupons for Costco.

WEEK THREE
spent: $89.52
total amount saved in specials, rebates, and coupons: Who knows. I'm bad about writing down what coupons I've spent or what I caught on sale.

This week I spent a little more than I would have, but I was hosting a baby shower for a friend of mine. So, I had a bunch of snacky type foods and ingredients to buy for stuff I made. Still cheaper than buying platters of stuff. My goal this week is to not go to the grocery store. I buy all this stuff and my pantry is pretty full, so I'm going to try and get by without buying anything.

WEEK FOUR
spent: $2.13
total amount saved in specials, rebates, and coupons:

I said I was going to try and stay away from the grocery store, and I almost did! Haha. When I was shopping at my Super Target, they had grapes on sale. Alex loves grapes, so I got some. But I think I did pretty good!

WEEK FIVE
spent:
total amount saved in specials, rebates, and coupons:

TOTALS:
amount budgeted for month: $300
amount spent: 268.56
monthly over or (under): (31.44)

So, what counts as "groceries". Like, I sent DH to the store last night for tums, does that count?

It depends on you. I include: diapers, wipes, food, toiletries, etc. I don't include cokes (usually), because my husband gives me money for his cokes (or I'll just add what he gives me into my budget to include them..) I include everything that I buy on a regular basis to keep the house going.

I usually say "consumable items"

anything that you use and then its not there anymore.

ie I include paper towels but not kitchen towels

Thanks ladies. My motivation for doing this is strangely tied into my drive to be a more organized, less wasteful mom/wife. I'm not necessarily looking to save tons and tons of money, I just want to quit being so wasteful. I want to eliminate the nightly drive to the store because there is nothing to eat in the house. I want to have "family" time with my husband and teach my daugthers that dinner is not to be eaten in front of the TV. Which is why I'm budgeting/menu planning. But, I do want to start saving money for emergencies and for our children. I'm kinda stuck between the frugal mommies board/finanical planning board. So, I decided to go ahead and include my specific stores to the store for groceries. I shop at a wholesale club for baby wipes, household supplies, etc. And since I allowed for that in a different part of my household budget, I'll keep that separate from the groceries.
