Okay yesterday I almost hit this small dog that was on a main road. So I turned around and picked the dog up. I then proceeded to post signs for the owner. This was about 5pm. About 7, I still had not heard from the owner. I called animal control. They told me they could be out to pick up the dog if the owner did not contact me. The animal control officer picked up the dog around 9:30. He said it released me from any liability from the dog, and the owners would have 3 days to claim the dog before it was put up for adoption. Well about 11 this afternoon, I got a call from a lady saying she was the owner of the dog, and that her son was out in their front yard playing with it, when it ran off. I told her the dog was now at the animal shelter. About a hour later I got a call back from the lady, she said the dog was not at the shelter and she was calling the cops for animal theft. I told her to do as felt necessary, hung up, and called the shelter myself. The shelter told me that someone came in and claimed the dog early this morning. I told the shelter what the lady said. They told me I have nothing to worry about because I am not liable for the dog, even if it went to the wrong owner. I just feel really bad because it sounds like this was a kids dog.

More than likely the phone call to you was a lie and the one that was trying to get a dog as a bait dog or something else. Typically you have to have a pretty good description of the animal you lost in order to just pick them up at the shelter, so doubtful that the people that picked it up were the "bad" ones.

On the other hand of that though, I wouldn't feel bad. A responsible ADULT in the home should have not allowed a child to have a dog in the front yard running free in the first place and should have explained that a dog should either be in a confined area or needs to be leashed or somehow tied out in order to prevent them from running off.

You're not the one that should feel bad, the owners should be the ones feeling bad...and again, I'd be more inclined to believe the call was the crank versus the people that ended up getting the dog at the shelter.

You did FAR more than most folks would have done, so definitely no need to feel bad or guilty.

+1

That lady should be ashamed to have spoken to you like that. Anyone stealing an animal isn't going to the trouble to put up signs and even PICK UP the animal in an effort to reunite it with it's irresponsible family. Sheesh!
