Nowadays, many people keep dogs as pets, they not only provide many pet supplies, but also accompany with them and care for their health. Walking is a good way to exercise and deepen the emotion between pet owner and the dog.
But I have a question, when you go out, do you let the dog follow you freely, or you handle it with a collar and leash?

If were walking on the street yes we use a leash but most of the time we go to a park or hiking trail and they are off leash.

Yes, we use a leash when walking our dog. Once we get close to the house we let him off the leash usually.

Well, even if I wanted to let my dog off leash (which I do not) it is not legal to do so in my area, so if we are outside of our home or backyard our dogs are leashed.

Maybe the law consider more about other's safety.

Well, my dogs don't have an issue with people, so that isn't the reason that I leash them, so for me it isn't an issue of other's safety but their own. People are sue happy and will claim anything to get a buck nowadays. So, my dogs are leased to stay within the confines of the law as well as to protect them.

We always leash our dog. He absolutely loves car rides and sometimes my mom will let him out of the house to her car if she's taking him somewhere without a leash and I don't even care for that. I've seen so many dogs run in front of my car and have to stop frantically to let my dog off the leash. The last thing I need is for him to see a cat and go chasing after it.
We have a sizable back yard though so he can run around there freely. Neither of us spend much time outside right now though because it's way too hot.

Well, some cats are bigger than him so at first they would pick on him. He was pretty scared of them since their claws are usually sharper than his. But then he figured out if the barks and chases them they'll be the scared ones. So it's sort of a "the best defense is a good offense" kind of thing.

If its out in the street or a public place you generally have to have your dog leashed by law, but when we go to a park or for a walk in the woods I can trust him to follow closely.

Our dog is always on lease when outside of the home, we don't have a fenced in yard and his recall isn't all that great. If he sees a cat, hes going after it. (No misunderstandings with cats, he hates most cats)
Most places have a leash law, so he would need to be on a leash law anyways.

Absolutely leashed for both of my dogs, unless out in the middle of nowhere or on private land. One of my dogs is very aggressive towards strange dogs, and it seriously annoys me when people let their dogs loose in public. Weather your dog is friendly or not, if it approaches mine, there WILL be a dog fight.

I've always leashed my dogs, simply because I know how prone they are to chasing something they want. Yea you can usually see the warning signs, but a moment looking away is all it takes for them to run in the road. However when we take them to the creek I let them roam because there's no road nearby.
