We have a community mailbox at the end of the street, since we are in a condo unit. I usually take one of my dogs with me when I walk down to get the mail... Our 4 1/2 month old Pitbull, Luna, goes out with me most often, as she is our youngest dog and we are still working on socializing with her. People always ooh and ahh over her, comment on how cute she is, and then ask what "mix" she is. When I tell them she is a purebred Pitbull, they back up and become rigid.
Now, two seconds before, when you didn't know what kind of dog she was, you were just fine with petting her, scratching her behind the ears, and letting her lick you...
But now that you know what kind of dog she is, you back up in fear that she will take off a limb??
I guess I just do not understand the thought process of the general public, especially those who are NOT properly educated on dogs, how to interact with them, and their behavior.
Just because she is a Pitbull does not mean that you should run back to your home and lock the door...
Okay, you don't have to trust the dog... But have a little faith in my ability to handle and control my "vicious" puppy.

I have had this happen before and it continues to floor me when it happens. One time I had a lady over who was having so much fun playing with roxy (our apbt). She was running around the house and just telling me how well behaved and happy she was. Then she asked what breed she was. As soon as I said that roxy is a pit bull she jumped up and said, "You should get rid of her since you have a baby"
