I have to supplement, and we tried to give Douglas a bottle of powdered formula the other night. He took the whole thing down no problems...but then 2 hours later I found him lying in his vomit; some of it looked partially digested. I never heard him throw up or cry or anything. He seemed content as a clam and not at all bothered but I was a wreck!

We thought he may just not like this formula (Costco brand), but I remembered when I made the bottle I noticed something strange - I put in 4 oz of water and two scoops as it said, but it came out to almost 5 oz of formula. Did I make it wrong? I tapped the scoop then leveled it off with a knife. Does that mean I packed it (which you're not supposed to????)????

OMG I just feel awful if I am the one that caused him to throw it all up. Please help!

You didn't make it wrong. On the can it says that once the powder is added to the water it'll add about an extra 0.2 oz to the bottle...which is why it looks like there's an extra half ounce in the bottle. If it was close to a whole ounce of added then the powder probably was a little packed in the scoop. What I do is I fill up the scoop then tap it on the side of the can so the extra powder falls off and its level.

You mixed it right. I just level off with knife and don't tap it. Emily sometimes spits up when she is sleeping and I never hear her. The curdled stuff is what has reached the stomach. som babies just spt up and more so with formula I have read in books. good luck and you did nothing wrong.

You didn't do anything wrong darling You mixed it just fine. It will make an extra half ounce or so, just because you are adding a solid to the already 4 oz. of water... so naturally it is going to measure out to a teensy bit more.

It's just spit up. It happens, and if it looks like it was partially digested, it's because it probably was. lol BM is much more gentle than formula and his tummy is just adjusting to the new item in it.

And remember - what looks like a LOT of vomit, actually isn't. There is also a lot of saliva in it and just laying out, especially if he was laying in it, makes it look like a lot more than it actually is. If he wasn't upset by it, he is probably just fine.

I agree with everyone else that you didn't do anything wrong. If he continues to spit up the formula, you may try using more water per scoop than the can suggests - that's what I do. I do one scoop for 2.5oz of water. The formula isn't as thick that way and she doesn't spit up as much.
