Is it pretty common during a growth spurt for a FF baby to eat a lot and often? My son turned 3 weeks yesterday and today he is sleeping horrible, fussy and wanting to eat all day long. He's taking 4oz at a time and wanting more every 2 hours, sometimes sooner. I don't want to overfeed him and make him sick, but he seems so hungry all day today! Does this seem normal?
Absolutely - all babies will tend to eat more than normal during a growth spurt, formula fed or breast fed. It's completely normal.
In order to avoid over feeding him, make sure you have tried everything else before giving him another bottle. Change his diaper, try to put him to sleep, change the scenery, give him a pacifier, etc. Feed him smaller amounts more often.
Three weeks is a very common time for a growth spurt. Two hours between bottles is a pretty common time interval too. He is still very young and his tummy is very small, so he will need to eat often, especially during a growth spurt.
You will probably run into another growth spurt around six weeks too
3 weeks is always a growth spurt, it seems like! Joel was eating 4 ounces every 2 hours for 3 days straight at 3 weeks. Unless he's spitting up a lot at every bottle I wouldn't worry about him eating too much. It's amazing how much these tiny little ones can eat!
