Hey everyone, Iam new to this board I just had a baby girl 5 weeks ago. I tried breastfeeding but it was not working for us. At the hospital she was given enfamil lip and was having spit up problems. When we got home I tried earth's best organic formula and similac advantage and both of those did not work. The doctor suggested enfamil gentlease it seems to work her spit up problem is much better however she does get constipated alot and gets really fussy during the evening. I wanted to ask if any of you know if a formula can contribute to sleping problems. For example my daughter falls asleep at 3 in the morning and wakes up around 8 or 9 and maybe sleeps an hour or two during the day. She gets fussy around six pm and does not fall asleep till 3. Her father had an allergy to milk when he was little and I was thinking maybe she could be too. Which formula would work best for her if she cannot tolerate milk?

Sorry you are going through this right now. When she is awake at night is she crying in pain, arching her back, etc. What are her symptoms? My daughter has reflux and we tried several things. One thing I recommend first to do is to try her on a Lacto Free formula. She may be having problems breaking down the lactose. Similac has a formula called Similac Sensitive...however I gave that to my daugher and it made her very gassy. Enfamil used to have LActo free and Ia m soo mad they switched to gentleease. Also PArents choice has a lactose free product. We hve our daughter on Nutramigen now, which is expensive. So if you could start by going lacto free or switching to soy you will save more money f there is not an allergy to cows protein

It's normal for babies to be fussy at night time, so just know that you are not going insane, it's just normal for babies to get their day and nights confused.

I live in australia so the formula brands we have are different, but there are many brands out there, so it's just a matter of persisting and finding something that works.

You can get soy based forumla, and you can also get lactose free formula as well.

You may also want to consider gripe water (i'm not too sure if you get that but this is what it is click here)
It was a god send for Kayla it god rid of all her wind and made her sleep better.

Miles on the other hand was bf, and well infants friend worked well for him.

You could try Similac Sensitive it's Lactose free, my daughter is on it for most of her feeds and is sleeping so much better she would scream from 2-5 am. Being a little fussy is normal but to the point where nothing you can do will calm them down is more like colic. The last choice of formula is the expensive ones for colic.

First of all - WELCOME!!! Congratulations on your little one!!!!
Sorry to hear you are having trouble

So she is only sleeping from 3:00 am - 8:00 am, and then a few hours during the day?
Wow that must be frustrating... that certainly isn't enough sleep for a 5 week old. It could be the constipation that is making her fussy. Constipation is common in young babies - there are several things you can try to help this. This is my favorite resource for constipation information constipation, infant

Here is some great information on milk allergies in babies.
Milk Allergy in Infants
Milk allergies are often difficult to work with, as babies who are allergic to milk proteins are often allergic to soy proteins as well. You can also try a hypoallergenic formula like Nutrimigen or Allimentum.

She could also have reflux - which I only suggest because she was spitting up. While the change in formula could have resolved the spit up, she could still be having discomfort from the acid reflux in her esophagus. I would ask your pediatrician about it - there are formulas out there to help with that too - Enfamil AR, Similac Sensitive RS - and medications like Prevacid and Zantac.
