Early in the morning on March 18th, 2:45am or so I wake up needing to use the restroom. I get out of bed and as I begin walking to the bathroom I feel some fluid falling out. I thought that I had just peed myself so I go finish in the restroom and as I stand up to clean myself up more fluid comes out. I wake up my husband and tell him either my water is breaking or I can't control my bladder. I keep convincing myself it is the latter so I go lay back down in bed.
As I'm laying in bed I start feeling some cramping that resembles period cramps but they are not painful or coming at regular intervals so I lay in bed for about an hour before I feel like I need to go pee again. So I wake up and as I'm walking to the restroom I get the trickle of fluid again. After I wipe I notice the TP has pink on it. I had never seen that during my pregnancy and it was then I finally realized I was probably in labor.
So I call the on call Dr and after asking me some questions they tell me to go ahead to the hospital to get checked out.
So DH and I get to the hospital about 5am and they wheel me up to L&D where they hook me up to monitor me and the baby.
Then the nurse wants to take a sample to make sure that my water has indeed ruptured. I think she used a speculum and I'm not sure exactly what she was doing but she told me it would be uncomfortable and OMG it hurt like hell. Well the test strip turned purple/black which means my water did break and so I was officially admitted. I was also 3cm at this point, I think it was about 6am.
Then they got my IV started since I was GBS positive and basically layed in the bed for a few hours as they monitored my contractions. The contractions were not painful at all just felt like mild period cramps.
Then I think about 9am they checked me and I was at 5 cm. I remember thinking I could not believe I was already 5 cm and not in that much pain. So they said they wanted to start me on pitocin to get things going because my contractions were still not coming very regularly. They told me that if I wanted the epi I should go ahead and get it before taking the pitocin since that would intensify the contractions. I got the epi even though I had not been really in any pain yet.
I was nervous to get the epi but to my surprise it didn't hurt at all and wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
So then the waiting was on again after the pitocin and after a couple hours or so I was at 7cm. Then about noon or so nurse said they would check my cervix again at about 12:30 but the changed her mind and decided to go ahead and check me. So then the Dr walked in and he checked me and said you are at 10cm and ready to have this baby! He wasn't expecting this as he had to rush out of the room to go change into his scrubs. DH and I were kinda in shock at this time because we thought we still had a few hours and it was all happening so fast!
So I started pushing at about 12:30PM and I did 4-5 sets of 3 pushes and she was born at 12:51PM. I was relieved after the first few pushes because Dr said she was going to come out quick so I knew I was not going to have to push for long.
Once she was born they set her on my chest for a few seconds and then took her to a table next to my bed to clean her up. When I heard her first few cries it was one of the best moments of my life and I began to cry.
So overall I had a pretty uneventful and not painful labor and delivery. I felt very blessed. I did have an episiotomy though so the recovery from that has not been fun.
