First of all, let me thank Mel for keeping you guys updated! You are the best DDB ever
Here is the story:
Tuesday the 12th I had my 37 week appointment. I went in, she said I was strep B negative which was great, but that I was still "very high, very tight and only one cm". We actually talked about the fact that I may go past my due date and that she would schedule an induction for week 41. So I left and ran a million errands. I was going to start packing our hospital bag, but we still had to go pick up a few things. I decided that Dustin and I would go shopping the next day then get everything together. We both figured we had plenty of time at that point. All I can say is thank goodness we decided to go out to the Spaghetti Factory for dinner that night!
That night I got up around 1:30 to use the bathroom then went back to bed. At 2:00 I felt like I needed to use the bathroom again, and when I got up there was literally a gush of water that came running down my leg! I thought "Oh my god I just peed myself". I went to the bathroom and noticed that I was still leaking which I thought was odd. Then it dawned on me that my water had probably just broken! I called the nurse line and told her, she said to get my bags packed and head on in.
I woke up Dustin, and he ran around getting everything together. He was so great. He packed our bags, threw them in the car, and off we went. Thank goodneess that it happened at 2am, we had no traffic and got there quickly.
When I got there they took me back to my room and had me change into a gown. I have to say that I'm pretty sure the whole process would be much nicer if you weren't leaking like Niagra falls! Having your water break before you go into labor is just a messy thing.
I was not having any contractions at that point, so they put in an IV (only 2 tries), and started me on Pitocin. They had to keep upping the dose. Finally I went into active labor. I was pretty comfortable most of the time, but by 11:30 I decided that I wanted an epi. I was having some bad back labor at that point. The epi was a breeze! So easy, and virtually pain free! It did take a bit more on the right than the left, but that was fine, I felt almost instant relief. I have to say that my nurses I had while I was there were great. We stay in the same roon for everything, and we all get a dedicated nurse in our room. We had a total of 3 over our entire labor process, but they were all fantastic and so helpful.
At some point they noticed that Nathan was not reacting well to the contractions. His heart rate was dropping and not recovering fast enough. They were getting worried that he may have to come out via c section. Of course I didn't really care either way, I just wanted him to be safe and healthy.
They stopped the pitocin to see if he would recover, and he did, so they kicked it back on an hour later. I started feeling a lot of pressure and told her that I thought I wanted to push. The last time they had checked me I was only 8, and this was only about 40 mins later, but I just knew I was ready. It took them another 45 minutes to check me and when they did, sure enough I was at 10 and ready to push.
I started to push at 7:33 and Nathan arrived at 8:06. He was so small. At birth he weighed 6 lbs 4.5 oz. and was 20 1/4 long. I did have a second degree tear and have a bunch of stitches, but other than that I felt great right away. I was up and walking within an hour.
The first night he slept a lot, and I got no sleep because the hospital bed was so uncomfortable. So by the time we left I had been up for 45 hours straight. He was having problems feeding and still is, but apparently that's because he was early. We go back tomorrow for his post partum appointment, and hopefully things will get better from here. He did lose weight and was 5 lbs 12 oz when we left. We had no preemie clothes, so Mom went out and bought us some, and they are still too big!
He is adorable though and we are so in love with him. I did have a really hard time last night. I think because I was up for 45 hours with no sleep, but I had a breakdown. I told Dustin I wasn't sure I could dod this, and that I was going to be a terrible Mother. He was so great, he took Nathan and slept on the couch with him so I could get some sleep. So in between feedings I did get at least 4 hours which made me feel like a new person today. I feel much better about things, I just needed some rest. I am still frustrated with the breast feeding, but we'll see what happens. I just want this little guy to be healthy and start gaining weight. Whatever we have to do to get to that point is fine with me!
Here are a few pictures of him. We need to go to Babies R Us and get a few more things and some other outfits for him since not much fits. Hopefully we can do that tomorrow. I'm pretty sore today so we are taking it easy. We still have a ton of stuff to do around here, so we are going to try to get that done. Dustin has until June 1st off so that is nice.
Thanks for all the well wishes, you girls are so fantastic. It really meant a lot to me.
