My birth story is still amazing to me! It was so unexpected.

Colette was due July 10th and seeing as she's my first baby I expected to go way over due, so on July 1st when I started experiencing mild contractions I didn't think much of it. I relaxed in a bath, watched a movie with Ryan and went to sleep about midnight. At 3am I woke up and thought I wet the bed ! I was horrified until I got up to race to the bathroom and realized it was still gushing out. I knew then that my water must have broken! Ryan woke up and immediately started getting us ready to head to the birth center which was about an hour and half away. Again, because I'm a first time mom I expected to labor for hours so thought nothing of picking a place to birth so far away. We called my midwife and my mother and told them we were on our way.

About 20 minutes into the drive I was in some serious pain. Ryan was getting frustrated with me because we thought I was in early labor and I was NOT handling it very well. I tried my Lamaze breathing but nothing was helping. Looking back now I realize it's because I was in transition and my body had gone into fight or flight mode.

I laid the passenger seat all the way back and got on my hands and knees and began doing pelvic tilts (all while screaming at Ryan to SPEED!) when I realized I was pushing. I quickly sat down and looked at Ryan and said "I feel like I'm bearing down when I am in that position". After about 10 more minutes of that I hit the button for the hazard lights, picked up the cell phone and dialed 911, handed it to Ryan and said "You're on the phone with 911, pull over, she's coming!" He quickly swerved into the shoulder of the road and began speaking to the dispatcher explaining he was on the side of I-40 eastbound and his baby was crowning. Thanks to excellent prenatal care, a wonderful Lamaze instructor, a patient 911 operator and most of all, thanks to Ryan being level-headed and awesome, Colette was born in the passenger seat of my car in about 3 pushes at 4:45ish in the morning!

The paramedics arrived about 5 minutes later and took us to the hospital. We were discharged after about 24 hours and went to my mom's house to recover for a week.

She was a tiny peanut, weighing only 4lbs 10 oz and 18'' long (at full term!!). She rapidly put on weight and is now over 5lbs. and fitting in some newborn clothes. All the Drs. have said she was 39 weeks gestational age, she's just itty bitty, but she's amazingly healthy, loves to nurse and is absolutely perfect. I'm feeling great, Ryan is a wonderful father, Colette is a beauty and the car needs a full wash/wax/detail job.

Here's a picture of her right after we arrived at the hospital. Her umbilical cord is so long because they cut it in the ambulance. We had it trimmed down later (and now it has fallen off!):

And here is a picture of her in her carseat going to the Dr. for the first time:

What a story! Congratulations!!! She is so teeny and cute! I agree with Jen, though, you'll have to find someplace MUCH closer for the next one...

Thanks so much girls! I have to take a picture of her birth certificate later today and show you how funny it is. It says "Location: Automobile; Facility: Interstate 40 Eastbound Mile 151". She'll be telling the story for the rest of her life anytime she has to show her birth certificate!

We've decided we'll have a home birth for the next one! I'm not going ANYWHERE the next time.
