My husband and I got up at 4 am to get ready and be at the hospital for 545, my c section was scheduled for 7 am.
I went in the prep area and met the nurses and saw my anaesthesiologist. They again reviewed the plan and discussed the rods in my back. I felt really confident that they would do a good job. While we were waiting they gave Teddy a paper outfit, hair net-thing and a mask to wear. My Dr came in and told us that there was a woman who was pushing and told me that my section would have to wait a bit. It turned out to be a fast delivery for that other mom and I was in the OR within 30 min.
Here they gave me my spinal block. It hurt a bit, but was not nearly as bad as you'd think a needle into your spinal column would feel! I also had a great nurse who really helped me through it. When the block was in effect it was a crazy feeling. It's like when you get "pins and needles" from sitting cross legged too long- but from the waist down. I could feel them rubbing the iodine on me- but felt nothing from the incision. It was a weird and not unpleasant sensation.
I looked in the mirror and watched them pop him out. What a moment!! He cried right away and Teddy ran off to follow him to get weighed and measured. What seemed like only seconds later the worlds best nurse came back with my camera and showed me all the pictures that she took (thats right she's a photographer, too!!) of what Teddy and Wilson were doing. It was amazing. Then Teddy came back with our son and we met face to face for the first time.
Then they took him to the nursery and I went to recovery to wait for the feeling to come back. 30 min later Teddy came with the baby and I nursed him. He got a good latch out of the gate and ate for 7 minutes! Then he and Teddy went back to the nursery and I was wheeled to our room.
I felt pretty itchy from the pain medicine and threw up a few times, but overall it was Ok. He was doing great in the hospital so they let us go home a day early. I could not have asked for a better birth/recovery situation. I feel so blessed and can't imagine what I ever did to deserve the amazing gift that was delivered with the utmost care.
Thanks for reading this. I hope we all participate in this thread as our babies arrive, I love reading the stories.
