Hi, ladies. I'm new to this board, and I have a question. I'm going to start Ryland on rice cereal in the next week. He's almost 4 months old, and he's exclusively breastfed. My question is what should I mix the rice cereal with? When I started my first DS, Caleb, on cereal I was supplementing with formula so I just mixed the formula and water and cereal. I'm not giving Ryland formula, and I don't have a breast pump, so do I just mix the cereal with water? And another question...is early evening the best time of day to introduce cereal? Thanks, girls!

You can mix the cereal with BM (some say hand express, but I have never tried that), formula, water or juice (I use apple). AS far as the time of day, a lot of people do evening bc they think the babies sleep longer (opinions are mixed on that)--my advice is to do it when he's not very tired and not starving, but is hungry. I usually feed Troy about 1/2-1 hr. after he wakes from a nap and then BF him about 1 hour after that--he still eats very well for me then. Good luck!
I tried mixing the cereal with juice at first because it was making him constipated but something either the cereal or the juice or the mix was causing him to throw up so I tried mixing the cereal with water and with breastmilk and he wouldnt take either so we skipped cereal all together. I think that I would try a lunch time meal first. IMO its easier because they arent as tired and ready to go to bed and then if they have a reaction you know . Dylan would throw up about 3-4 hrs after he ate cereal. Im not saying yours will as they say it is very rare for babies to have problems with rice cereal.
I just thought I would add, my doc said during the first year cereal is the most important solid they can be eating. They need the iron, she said the other stuff is more for fun, to check for allergies and to see what likes baby has.
They say to start new foods in the morning, or earlier in the day so that you can tell if your baby is unusualy fussy(i.e if you give it in the evening, and baby gets tummy ache you may associate the baby's fussiness with being tired since its close to bedtime). I would suggest giving it in the morning or mid-day for the first 3 days, and if all is good, then you can switch it to whatever time of day suits everyone best. I say 3 days, because it can take up to 3 days for an allergy to show up, so once 3 days have passed you will know there is no allergy and continue from there. This is why they suggest introducing only one new food every 3 days. hope this helps
When I started Brody on cereal I gave it to him before bed. I mix it with breastmilk. If you don't have a pump you can hand express (its actually incredibly easy to do) If I don't have any pumped I will just hand express a little
