So as many of you ladies know, DH and I are going to be starting to TTC this next cycle (whoohoo!). However, I got thrown a curve ball last night and I am not sure what I should do. I applied for a job a few months ago, but due to budget cuts they were holding off on hiring. However, now they have offered me the job. I currently have a job that is super low stress, but incredibly boring with no room for growth. That is not the case with this other job. The only thing that is stopping me from putting in my two-week notice today is that I am thinking I might be able to use my new job offer as leverage at my current job.

I've been looking for a job where I could work from home for a while now especially since that will be my only chance to stay at home with my baby once I have one. So I am thinking of using this new job offer to ask my current boss if he would consider letting me work from home instead.

Has anyone ever tried to do something like this before? I honestly don't even know how to broach it. I would love some thoughts from you ladies. Also, have any of you done the WAHM thing? How difficult is it to do with a newborn?

TIA!

It's worth a shot! If nothing else then you could always go to the other job you know?

As for the WAHM thing, I do it now but didn't when Dd was a newborn. Mines a little different since it is an at home daycare but I love getting to spend time with Dd and pay off debt at the same time.

I don't really know what to advise, but it sounds like this could be a really great opportunity for you. If you're able to do your current job from home and you think your boss would be willing to allow that for you if he/she knows you have other options, I think it might be worth a shot. I'll let people who've actually been wahms chime in on that aspect, but if it could work for you I can see it being a great thing.

The only thing I would consider would be what would happen if your boss would NOT go for the work-from-home option. Would you keep your low-stress but boring job anyway or would you follow through with taking the other job? Does the other job work with your ttc plans?

I think if my current boss does not go for the WAH plan, I will switch jobs. The only down side to all of this is that it might mean waiting a couple more months to ttc (sigh...)

If I did get pg this next cycle and started the new job, I wouldn't be eligible for the FMLA job protection because I am pretty sure you have to work at a place full-time for 12 months before you are protected under the act. However, I know this guy really well and actually worked for this same company in a different city a couple years ago, so I don't think they would really try and screw me over or anything and give away my job during maternity leave. But I guess there is really no way in knowing for sure.

I don't know....both jobs have their up sides and down sides. Thanks for your advice, ladies!

Yes, you have to be at a job for 1 year to be covered by FMLA, but there are also other requirements like the size of the company and the amount of employees, etc.. I am not a WAHM..but I would love to be! If your boss will let you swing it...even a few days a week, I'd say go for it! As far as how to bring it up....I have no adivce...sorry...no help at all. lol KUP!

I agree, if you think your current job could be swayed into a WAHM job I would do it. You are a writer, no? IDK how that will work with a new baby, do you need quiet to focus?

You have that safety net of, if they won't let you, switch jobs. If you are already unhappy where you are, it's worth a shot!
