So, DH and I were talking and doing our taxes. Somehow TTC came up and he told me we can TTC Feb and March (I am avoiding April & May maybe part of June)... as long as I am OK with the insurance situation.

See, in October, I will go on his insurance (still have my own through work) but we want to use his insurance to have the baby since shortly after I will quit my job and be a SAHM. So my question to you mom's is this.

Does it mater how long you have been seeing your OB before giving birth? What was your experience? Would it have mattered if you had been seeing your OB for 1 week, 1 month, 6 months pre delivery?

I will have my work insurance (Blue Shield HMO) and get prenatal care through them, then October 1st I will use DH's insurance (Kaiser HMO) for all prenatal care through delivery. It would be open enrollment so it wouldn't be considered a preexisting condition. If I got PG this cycle my due date could be early as end of October/beginning of November. Would it mater that I may have only been seeing this OB for couple weeks? Would it be better to have the baby under my insurance and then switch both of us over to his insurance after birth?

I am doubtful I would get PG this cycle or next, because I am a negative Nancy. Should we go for it? Regardless we will have insurance, and we will be OK financially... OMG I can't believe DH brought it up!!!! A while ago he was panicking about finances and that we wouldn't be able to, now he says let's try!!!!

For me, I'd want to stick with the same OB, just to make it easier on me. I don't see why you can't have one OB that takes both insurances though, if you haven't found one yet start calling around now, or look on line to see if any overlap in the networks. Just because a doc takes one dosen't mean they won't take the other.

Has he looked into adding you now? A lot of companies count marriage as a "major event" and allow adding someone before open enrollment, not sure if you could drop your insurance though, never gotten married don't know how that all shakes down. Anyways, as you aren't pregnant now it might be a good opition to look into.

If you already have an OB that dosen't take his insurance, ask what an out of pocket cost would be for the last bit of your pregnancy (depending on when you get pregnant), it might be worth it. If you know in advance you can start socking away the money early.

All that being said, changing OBs probably wouldn't be the end of the world. It happens. Just make sure to communicate with the current OB that you'll need your medical records sent to a new OB when the time comes.

Where I'm from you don't get to choose your OB, period. There are several in a practice, you see them all in turn (sometimes you don't get to see them all, my mom and aunt never did), and you get who ever is on call when you deliver. So while for some it would make a difference, where I'm from you get used to the idea and go with the flow.

I'm going with a midwife. If something happens last minute, I get an OB I've never spoken to in my life looking at my girlie bits in great detail. It can be done, and I bet there are worse things out there!

I also agree with the above of trying to find an OB that accepts both insurances. I'd double check on something though... make sure you wont have to pay your deductible twice. If you do, I'd personally hold off TTC until you only had the one amount of money to pay.

I think the other ladies have given great advice! Do some research over the next couple days to see what would work best! How exciting that you get to TTC!!!

From my experience, with my first 3 kids I was seeing an OB, but it was a group practice and it really didn't matter who you saw. Whoever was on call that day/night would deliver the baby anyway. My 3rd was actually delivered by a resident doctor, because my OB had to deliver someone in the next room (it was a busy night) Apparently Sept. is the busiest month for births.
With my 4th I was seeing a midwife (well 2 of them actually) and it was really nice to get to know her and feel sort of comfortable that one of them would definately be the one to deliver, it was more personal that way.
So to answer your questions, I don't really think it matters so much how long you are seeing an OB, since they treat you like a number anyways. But on the other hand if you have some sort of medical issues or complications you would want to have someone throughout your pregnancy who knows your history.

Thanks ladies, I am almost beside myself that we are actually going to do this. DH seems so calm, I'm the one flipping like OMG I can't believe we are going to try and get pregnant!

We both have HMO's that have co-pays so we cant overlap insurance. I think I will probably use mine 100% unless I really dislike my OB in the end of my PG. It's nice to hear from you about your experiences. I keep comming bakc to, who will actually delivery me, probably not my OB, probably who ever is on call since it's an HMO. I can't predict the future so as long as I have insurance no mater what, I think it's all good.

I am 99.9% sure I won't get PG this cycle, and 50% sure it wont be next cycle and I will still be waiting for June/July.

Do whatever you think is best. I used a Midwife with ds2 and a back up OBGYN that I saw for the first 20 weeks, and then again at 28 weeks, and not again until I was 4 weeks postpartum. He would have been the OBGYN I was going to use if I transfered (homebirth). So if that would have happened I would have only seen him a handful of times prior to the birth. Not really a big deal to me.
