I have smokers induced asthma. I've never smoked a day in my life. The symptoms started when I was 9 (I had been tested for lung issues prior to 9 since my father was an asthmatic, but my lungs were clear) but I wasn't diagnosed until I was 22. My family smoked, and continues to smoke around the small kids in the family. Almost every single one of us has a crappy immune system, asthma, coughs etc.
I woke up the other day with a stuffy nose. Got meds, complained and whined, but knew I'd be better by today or tomorrow. I've been sleeping propped up, not spending excess time lying down because I wanted to avoid a cough.
Well lo and behold my cough shows up this morning! FUN! No not fun. The coughs are so wet, and so hard (which is actually a good thing....) that I'm afraid I'm going to choke on a cough drop. I've had to spit four out onto the floor to avoid choking on it when I do a huge intake of breath.
The last cough I had lasted three weeks, two bottles of cough med and constant use of inhalers. I only have enough of my inhalers to get me through one more cold.... And then we'll have to spend hundreds on getting them replaced ($200+ just to visit a doctor to see if they'll even give me the dang things).
So a note to everyone out there. Don't smoke around your kids. Don't let others smoke around your kids. When you get flack over it, tell them off. The possible outcome for the kids just isn't worth the risk. I'm ready for the flack when my family complains about the restrictions on being around my kids... Oh I'm so flipping ready. But right now, I'd like to give them all a dang slap for doing this to me.

i am so sorry you have to go through this. I am 10,000% with you on this. i am surprised i don't have asthma issues, i do occasionally probably from 2nd hand smoke.
my grandma, and everyone who lives in her house (uncle, uncle GF, cousin) smokes and anyone who visits smokes (mom, misc family ) IN THE HOUSE. her walls drip nicotine. i grew up visiting often. i have told my family i will not let my kids be in a confined space with them smoking like that. my grandma frequently lights a Virgina slim and leaves it in an ashtray burning for hours while she goes to another room to do something and lights another one to smoke. it drives me crazy, no only is that a fire hazard but it's so bad for everyone's lungs in that house including the poor dogs.
my MIL smoked while she was pregnant with DH, the thought makes me sick. she figured she gave up cocaine so that was good enough. i was visiting my in laws before we were married and a close friend of theirs was 8 months pregnant, smoking. i had to leave, i could not watch that. i would have said something if i was closer to them at that time. my MIL says she is not a considerate smoker (and proves it), I will take up that issue when we have a child.
my mom is trying to quit smoking before we have a child.

My mom smoked while pregnant with two of us... oddly we are the two who ended up with lung issues. His showed up when he was 2, same time mine did... we caught a bug, it turned into an awful case of broncitis, we were on meds for six months before we were cough free. It was the most awful spring/summer of my life. He doesn't seem to have any lasting damage, but I'd been around the smoking for 7.5 years before he was even born, and mom quit while she was nursing him (she never nursed and smoked though, she had the courtesy to at least sit by the window and make us play at the far side of the room. She was the ONLY one who did.
Puffer seems to have given me a bit of relief. I took it when I posted, and the cough just returned 2 minutes ago (and I took another dose). I picked up some honey, so I'm going to have some tea and put honey in it. I must be desperate.. honey is gross. lol

oh hun i'm so sorry you are feeling bad i hope you feel better soon.
i think things are alittle different over here people who smoke do tend to go outside think they are used to it from not being allowed to smoke in public indoors anywhere.
my dh smokes but he smokes out doors and would never dream of smoking indoors.
i'm lucky since having my kids i've never come across anyone that smokes in the house but if i did i'd be just the same as you hun.

That stinks! After I had my oldest my fil was not allowed to smoke in the house when he was there. He ended up having his first asthma attack at 1.5 years old, but his is from animals. He has less issues with it as he has gotten older. Have you gotten a prescription for a steroid? That was the only thing that used to help my ds's airways open. When he was younger he'd spend a couple of days in the hospital. Poor kid!
Anyway, getting back to the smokers in my dh's family they all would smoke outside. After my mil was diagnosed with thyroid cancer my fil was no longer allowed to smoke in the house any more. We wish he would quite.

I have both the steroid and rescue inhalers. I start the steroid at the first sign of a cough, I get some pretty awful side effects if I'm on them full time, so we have to pick and choose when it's worth it.
Course, I can't flipping find it right now.. but my regular one seems to be doing me ok. I'll keep rooting around for it.
The biggest problem with both, is they increase my heart rate. And I have a naturally high heart rate, so not only does my heart pound because I can't get in the air, the drugs make it pound harder. Two puffs of salbutamol (the blue puffer) this morning had my heart rate at 134 laying down. *sigh*
Someone did point out that I've given up caffeine, which helps asthmatics.. maybe I should rethink my soda choice and go to Diet something with caffeine rather than Diet A&W rootbeer.

So crappy I also have asthma and probably smoke-induced becasue my dad smoked around me when I was a kid (they didn't really understand smoking back then). Smoking arounds kids, parks, etc is a huge pet peeve on mine.

Smoking around children is a horribly irresponsible thing to do. I had a friend whose sister's family continued to do so constantly even though their daughter had horrible asthma and she ended up dying of an asthma attack.

Yup, I have an aunt who just doesn't comprehend child safety at all. She's stuck in the "Well it was done when I was a baby, and I didn't die" mentality.... no statistic in the world will convince her other wise. We as a family had to step in when her youngest turned one and advise her if she turned the car seat around we'd call the police and cps since the baby had a medical need to remain rear facing and FOUR doctors had advised her of it.
Even my own sister says "you can't leave them RF past a year, they could break their legs." better the leg than their dang neck!
My cough seems to be made worse by eating. I'm guessing I'm irritating the back of my throat and it makes me want to cough more. *sigh* I did go out and pick up some cough syrup (the kind to make me get it out, not a supressant)... I'd like this gone before the 2ww is over since I just found out my puffers are a class N drug, and I'd like the cough gone in case I get a bfp next week.
*sigh* nothing goes right for me, I swear.. I'd like to kick my mother upside the head right now... she may not have nursed and smoked, but she sure as hell bottle fed and smoked!

I agree with you.
I found out a few months ago that I have asthma - and i'm 24 (almost 25). I hate to admit that I am a smoker - but i refuse to smoke around my son. if he comes outside with me (absolutely NO SMOKING inside!!), he has to be like - 10 feet from me.
But before I was dxed with asthma - i had about 13 cases of bronchitis in a year.
As I said - i HATE to admit that I smoke - but i make sure my son is safe!
