It does hurt for the first couple of weeks. As long as you keep them dry and get a good latch, the pain should taper off. Get La Leche League's book The Motherly Act of Breastfeeding, and you should be set!

I wasn't able to BF DS after leaving the hospital. He latched on like a champ but yes it does hurt! And I ended up being bruised bc my first feeding post-op I couldn't feel that he wasn't properly latched. The stupid nurses talked me into supplementing for 2 feeding to give myself a break and once DS got the easy fast-flow from a bottle he wouldn't ever latch on again. It was really frustrating, upsetting and emotional for me. We would both get so upset when trying the next week home from the hospital. And without him eating my milk was drying up and I couldn't ever get anything out from pumping...so I gave up.

Having said all of that I hope and pray I can BF my next one!!

DD never really latched at all, but I managed to pump for 16 weeks. It was a really emotional time for me, but I plan to try again. But I will go in with more of a determination for it to work, but if it still doesn't work then I can say I tried!

DS1 - Didn't BF at all
DS2 - 17 months. He weaned on his own when I was 6 months pregnant with DS3
DS3 - He is a little over 14 months and still going. I want to go to 18 months and then gently encourage weaning.

I definitely think you should try it. It is worth it. I had a few problems with clogged ducts and things, but that was all cleared up within the first three weeks or so and it was smooth sailing from there. IMO, give it six weeks and then decide whether you will continue or not.

I was breastfed...and that's all the experience I have with it. I do plan on breastfeeding, but I've put off reading too much on it until I'm actually with child.

I'm currently breastfeeding my 4 month old son. It hurt for the first 2 weeks but was fine afterward. I plan on nursing til he's 12-15 months.

Breastfeeding is HARD. My biggest pet peeve with breastfeeding is when I hear a mom or mom-to-be saying that she is going to "try" to breastfed. There is no trying. When you say try you are honest to God setting yourself up to not accomplish what you intend.

And I will admit that I was one of those mom-to-bes who was all about "trying to breastfeed and hoping that I wouldn't have any trouble"

But you know what lots and lots of moms have trouble and lots and lots of moms have the pain. I had it all from painful latching, to nipple confusion, through in some FTT around 6m old, and then shake well with unsupportive courts and family members while going through a custody battle and that was my experience.

My daughter self weaned at 31 1/2 months old and I can not wait to go through all pain and annoyance for baby #2 and will breastfeed until baby #2 self weans.

Sorry the inner CLC in me was stirred. (This was no intended to offend anyone in anyway)

I attempted with my last two and I'll attempt again. DD made it to 6 weeks, but we had to start supplementing and eventualy my lack-luster supply went away. She was starving and I just wasn't producing. Then with DS I had some serious pyscological issues I was not expecting (not PPD, it had to do with past sexual assult), so we stopped cause I kept freaking out (locking myself in closets panic attacks freak out) everytime I tried to feed him. I pumped for a bit but eventually my still lack-luster supply went away.

This time, I'm seeing a shrink, I'm reasearching keeping my supply up, and gosh darn it I'm shelling out cash for the mostest amazing pump on earth (I work, not pumping, not an opition). I'm sick of making bottels half asleep at 4 am.

DD was both BF and formula fed until almost 10 weeks. Then switched over completely to formula. She needed to be supplemented early on and once we had it in the house it was just to much of a crutch. If we needed to go out I would make up a bottle and use it instead of having to nurse in public. She was impatient (would fuss waiting for let down and cry), I was impatient... I started to doubt myself and it wasn't the experience I was hoping for.

With DS we have had/are still having a wonderful experience and he is 10 months old. I've just started to cut back a few feedings and get him using a sippy cup. I've had mastitis twice in the last couple months, which is what is making me want to wean him the most. He's a much more relaxed patient baby when it comes to feeding and I think I'm just more patient and confident this time around as well.

Will I BF a third baby, ABSOLUTELY!

With my oldest son I was told by a resident doctor not to breastfeed because my iron was too low and so I was brought formula to feed him. I wish I would have talked to someone else about it, but I didn't know. I was only 20 and went with what doctors told me.

With my second son I went straight for the formula as i thought it would be easier. It was a good thing I did as he was diagnosed with some major stuff wrong with his heart at 3.5 weeks old and had to stay in the hospital over a month just with his first heart surgery. He had 2 more down the road.

I tried to breastfeed my third and fourth sons ho were twins, but they had trouble latching and I was panicking that it had been so long since they were born and they hadn't ate anything so I had the nurse give them formula. it actually was good because with 2 I needed help quite a bit in the beginning.

My fifth son I wanted to breastfeed and I did. I had a great nurse at the hospital I delivered him at who helped me get him to latch and even brought me a nipple shield that helped. I did have very sore nipples due to him being tongue- tied and was going to just formula feed as I had to give him some because of the pain and infection I ended up with, but I pushed on with the breastfeeding and breastfed him until he was just over 16 months old. I was also an on demand feeder so some days he was on me most of the day. lol

I am hoping that I get one more chance to breastfeed and if it's twins again I have experience that i should do a lot better next time!

I'm currently breastfeeding my 3.5 month old daughter. We had a rough start at first. She had a bad latch, I ended up with cracked nipples and then got abscessed mastitis. It was horrid. Then she had issues with weight gain. We finally got on track at about 7 weeks and we've been going strong ever since. I'd like to breastfeed for 24 months unless she wants to wean sooner.

We made it to about 6 months with DD. I had trouble keeping up my supply when I went back to work, I'm hoping to make it to a year with the next one. DP is big on BFing, she's looking up ways for the non-birth mom to breastfeed. Maybe if we tag team it we can keep going for awhile!

I did enjoy breastfeeding. I mean, it hurt like h***, but it was still pretty cool. I'm thinking just having the support of a partner this time (I was single mom last time) will help a lot.

With ds2, it didn't hurt until week 3. I got a plugged duct and it was agonizing. I did warm compresses and got it fixed. After that, no problems. Ds3 nursed like he was born to do it. It never hurt. He latched on perfect the first time and nursed like he had been doing it for years. It has been smooth sailing with him.

The first few months of nursing were very difficult for me BUT IT WAS 100% WORTH IT! My son had reflux and really had a difficult time latching (I think it was because he was scared to eat before he got his meds)
We are still nursing strong and just started BLW. I will most certainly try my hardest to do it with #2 as well.

I breastfed Brylie for 16m, well 2 days shy of her 16m birthday. She self weaned when i was 3.5m pregnant with Hunter.

Hunter is 13m and going strong, but I do see some signs of weaning. I knew when he was born that he wasn't nearly as interested in it as Bry was. He's just a little bundle of fire

I'm waiting on my IBCLC board results, but im 99% sure I passed if you have any questions please feel free anytime!

I am still breastfeeding Ellie and she is 22 months. It did hurt me for the first few days until we got her latch figured out. We had a lactation consultant see us at the hospital a couple times and DH and my family and his were very supportive so that helped. I highly recommend taking a class. That helped a lot too.

It hurts because most moms dont know what a correct latch looks like. It is hard because a doctor or IBCLC will tell you that it is a good latch but no one really explains what a good latch should look like! Even though that is what a good doctor/IBCLC should tell you. That your latch is looking good and what that consits of..fish lips, nose touching breast, baby pulled close, tummy to tummy if you are doing cradle hold, ect..
