Linz 's post on the car got me thinking of this so i thought everyone could add one baby saying they think is complete and total rubbish. I'll start with the one got me thinking of this:

1. All babies love cars, and go right to sleep in the car.

2. Your baby will sleep through the night by 4 months.

You have to teach them to be independent/if you hold them too much they'll be clingy.

Well on gender determination every one of those methods does work 50% of the time.
I can remember being told both my boys were girls by the way I carried, in spite of clear ultrasounds and with Billy amnio as well -- "Those things can be wrong you know".

You have to break your kiddo of this habit (insert cosleeping, nursing to sleep, whatever...) now so it wont be a problem in the future. *big rolling eyes*

That advice often comes followed by "i knew this couple who had this kid who..." erm, I'm not parenting that kid.

Give the baby rice cereal and he/she will sleep through the night. I hate it when moms are told their breastmilk isn't enough before the baby is even 6 months old.

I thought of a couple but you guys beat me to it! I suppose for now I will just have to say the one my own mom threw at me, and that is that co-sleeping says more about the mom('s instability) than the child and that the baby doesn't care where they sleep.

Still ruffles me.

"You need to stop jumping everytime she fusses.... babies need to cry. Besides if you go to her everytime she makes a sound, she's going to start manipulating you and then you'll never be able to control her"

Uhh, no... its called responsive parenting. BTW, she's the most independant child I have thus far. While there are things I absolutely expect from my children (the military side of me, though I have learned to temper it to be age appropriate), I have NEVER tried to 'control' them (unlike my parents who are emotional manipulators).

My favorite one came from Jack's original pediatrician:

"Now that he is 11 pounds he can sleep through the night and does not need to eat in the nighttime anymore."

Really? Who set the "11 pound" rule?

These are pretty great!

For me, everyone told me while I was pregnant "Breastfeeding will be SO hard!" or "Don't feel bad if you can't breastfeed" and "Lots of women aren't able to nurse".

Now, I recognize there are women who really struggle with breastfeeding and they are AWESOME for trying, but I don't think everyone should make it sound so scary and terrifying that women are scared to even attempt!

"Advice" given to me by my midwives:

Your newborn should nurse for no longer than 40 minutes, then you should try to settle him to sleep. Wait at least an hour before offering him the breast again.

Turns out they were wrong though, since I gave birth to a baby, not a blooming stopwatch.
