First, who is reading Unconditional Parenting? How far along are you? There are some exercises near the end of the book (pg. 187-190) that I was thinking we could try to do, if enough of us have gotten that far.

Second, I'm thinking about the next pick. With the new "rules," we are only reading books that at least one of us has read or started reading, or has a friend who has read and recommended. As far as I know, there are only 3 books that meet this criteria:

Shen7's recommendation:
The Philosophical Baby: What Children's Minds Tell Us About Truth, Love, and the Meaning of Life: Alison Gopnik: Amazon.com: Kindle Store

http://www.justmommies.com/forums/f1...our-picks.html (Let's have your picks!)

Then there's Beyond the Sling, which a few of us have read:
Beyond the Sling: Jay Gordon, Mayim Bialik: Amazon.com: Kindle Store

I think there was another one recommended by noworries? I'm thinking it was something about Positive Discipline or Positive Parenting but not Positive Discipline A-Z. Can someone please remind me?

When I have a complete list of options I'll post a poll so we can vote.

Another thing we could do is maybe read a shorter one, like Beyond the Sling, as a "bonus" book for the month of August. Many of us have already read it and some of us are faster readers than others.

I just requested this book from our local library and I'm #15 on the wait list! Wow. It might be September before I can get it, unless I decide to buy it.

I finished Unconditional Parenting but have it on Kindle. I did not notice the exercises but maybe I need to go back and check? Or maybe I skipped them since it seemed geared towards older kids. Sometimes the formatting gets weird when they put it in Kindle format...

They are geared towards older kids. Juliana is 2 and at that age I can kind of imagine what things will be like in a few more years and maybe do the exercise, but I can see how those of us with younger LO's wouldn't want to bother. That's good feedback though. I won't post a thread and do them by myself.

Maybe I'll see if I can get DH to do them with me.

I've read UP before. Don't remember the exercises since it's been a few months since I've read it and since then I've filled my brain up with VBAC and birth info. lol

One of the exercises is you're supposed to imagine that your kid is delaying bedtime and coming up with all kinds of excuses like more water, more snacks, etc. and bedtime keeps getting later and later. You and your partner are supposed to brainstorm a "working with" solution instead of a "doing to" solution.

This is something we face constantly but IDK if Juliana is old enough for what I think he is recommending, which is to sit down and talk about it when you're not "in the moment" and ask your child what she thinks you can do to make bedtime go more smoothly. At least that's what he said they did when his daughter was making them late for work in the mornings. They took her suggestion to let her get dressed the night before and it made things go much faster in the mornings. I think their DD was 4 at the time, though.

Oh heck that bedtime situation is every night here. Ha ha. Though talking to my son about it is fairly pointless at this stage. If he's pushing to delay bedtime we don't fight him and just try again in 20 minutes. Usually work at this stage. We're not very particular about bedtimes and nap time, just as long as he gets his sleep and it doesn't disturb us getting our sleep.
