How did you name your children? Any special meanings or family names?

DD is named after the Longfellow poem "The Children's Hour" Here is a recitation:

Longfellow Reads Longfellow: The Children's Hour - YouTube

It is about Longfellow's eternal love for his children. In the full version of the poem he mentions "the Bishop of Bingen in his mouse tower on the Rhine". Bingen is not far from where we live and we thought it fitting that an American poet mentioned the area where we live in his poem about the children he loved. Also, Longfellow is probably my favorite poet and this is one of my favorite poems.

Her middle name is after a relative on my side.

ETA: Just realized that this might make it seem like she's named "children" or "hour" or something...her name is in the poem

We chose Avery (actually I did, DH was not too thrilled with it) just because I really loved that name, and I thought it was unique and not over-done. (although it was #11 in my province last year, it's getting more popular).

I first heard it when I was about 11 and learned that Hanson had a little sister named Avery.

We choose Elizabeth because it is beautiful, a classic names, and went well with Avery.

I've wanted to name my daughter Julia since I was about 12, but DH's first girlfriend was named Julia so that was not going to work! It was the closest thing we could agree on.

M is named after my grandmother and her middle name is a family name on DH's mother's side. We had girl and boy names picked out before we were even married I think! Only the first ones though. If I ever get pregnant with another girl, we will have to think things out all over again.

David James- David was my grandfather's name who passed away when I was in high school and James is my father's name as well as my husband's name.

Katelynn Mackenzie- was a name we loved. I wanted to name her Mackenzie and he did not so we compromised.

Everett Michael Cole- Everett was a hard one, we couldnt decided on a boys name we went back and forth finally we agreed on Everett. His middle name was just Cole for almost my whole pregnancy until my Uncle Mike passed away close to his DD, so we added it in..

I love my kids names.

We just chose names that we liked but also that the meaning was something that we like.

Eva means "life" and grace means "God's grace".

Eli means "uplifted or ascended"

Isaac means "laughter" and the biblical story of Isaac played a big role on why we liked it so much.

My son's name is Dex. Not Dexter, just Dex. There really isn't any significance behind it, it's just a name DH and I could agree on.

When and if I have a girl her name will be Acadia Evangeline.

Acadia - this was a place in Eastern Canada where French settlers first lived. They have a tragic history of displacement by the British back to France and down into the USA (they are the people who eventually became the Cajuns). Families were split apart and it was very tragic.

Evangeline - this is a name of poem also written by Longfellow (like lovemylittlemiss) about an Acadian girl who was separated from her love and spends her life in search of him.

I also really love the name Genesis for a little girl. However, her last name would be Curtis and I think it might be cruel to give a child a rhyming name.

What do you think about the name Genesis Curtis?

I think it is beautiful.

My DH's late grandmother was Lillian. She took care of him growing up when his mother was at work and he loved her dearly. He always said she would have loved me When I was researching names I found out that Lila is a pet form of Lillian so we decided on that. Her middle name is Rae after my father Raymond. It sounds a bit country together but it suits her perfectly!

Love the stories ladies

How cool! Glad there is another Longfellow fan out there! I tried to get DH to agree on Evangeline if we have another girl but he out right rejected it.
I don't think Genesis Curtis is too bad. It's a lot of s's but I've heard names that are harder to say and more rhyme-y.

carlos is named after many, many men on my maternal side; uncles, grandfather, great grandfather, my brother is also a carlos...i wanted to continue that.
his middle name gabriel is after the archangel.
i had a boy and girl's name picked out years before getting pregnant. a girl would be named after my mother, grandmother, great great grandmother with maria as her middle name. (my first and middle names are after my paternal grandmother). i guess i'm a sucker for carrying on the family names.

I enjoy trying to guess what you ladies who don't use your kids names online really named them It gives me great pleasure.

I am nearly sure I know what littlemiss's real name is. It's gorgeous! I have a good friend who named her older daughter that. And it totally has grown on me (not to the point where I could use it too, since it would be weird being so unique for me to copy.) But I actually sorta thought it was that name even before you shared that poem...just because you mentioned it was unique, what it started with, and that your family gave you some flak about it. And her family really took her to town when she chose it, so my brain automatically thought it was the same name. I might not be right, but I will forever think of her being named that name.

And I call shens daughter Maggie in my head! Lolololol. Just because I imagine she could be named margaret and you call her Maggie. I am quite sure I am wrong, hence my saying it on here, and not littlemiss's name. But I entertain myself greatly!

My boys:

Liam Thomas: Liam was the only name that graced both of our "top ten" boys names list. On DHs it was number two. On mine it was number five. But since we agreed, it was a sell. Thomas is because I insisted our children need to have a family-based middle name. I offered for it to be after DHs family. He picked his fathers first name, which is also his brothers middle name. Which turned out great because it is also my grandfathers name. So I loved that he had three connections from one name.

Kieran Patrick: I found Kieran in a baby book when we were pregnant with the first baby we lost. I fell in love with it and tried to sell it to DH. He wanted nothing to do with it (and was trying to convince me to use his top boy name). After we lost that baby, we dropped names until the first sonogram where we saw two heartbeats (one was weak, one was strong). DH said we could use Kieran "for one of them" if I wanted. When we lost the twin, it was a foregone conclusion that we would use Kieran because my aunts twin sister died shortly after birth (4 days) and her name was Karen. I loved the gruesome symmetry. I was going to name my second child after my grandmother, who is the most awesome person alive, no matter what the gender was. A girl would have the middle name Patricia, a boy Patrick. Clearly we used the boy version.

Haha! That's so funny that you guessed it before! Obviously I'm not too bent out of shape if people know since I gave huuuge hints. Her name is in the private forum on here if you want to check to see if your guess is correct

Aiden we just liked. His middle name is my father's middle name.
This little girl's first name is just a name we both like (means "life"). We're trying to find a family name we love, but it's not going well. lol. So she might just end up with a middle name that we like with a good meaning to goes well with life.

Such a sweet poem, I'd never heard/read it before.

DH and I had the hardest time agreeing on names. Before we found out the gender we both really liked the name Ursula for a girl. Then I was leafing through a baby name book that a friend of mine had and it listed the name Ursul as a male variant of Ursula. I really liked it immediately, and DH liked it too. We literally had no other boy names that we both liked so when we discovered we were having a boy we just went with the one name we both liked lol. We picked DS's middle name in honor of my grandfather.

My DD is Emerson, we just really liked it. Actually we liked Emma, but didn't want a "popular" name, plus we have a friend with a dog named Emma and somehow that can just ruin a name for you, ya know? So we went with Emerson. Her middle name is Isabella because I love it, but it also happens to be DH's grandmother's name. That was a coincidence, not an on-purpose thing.

DS is Everett, I just liked it. I either wanted a name that started with E, or ended in -son. Most of the -son names I liked were too popular, or DH said no. Not many E names for boys I liked, but Everett worked! His middle names are my grandfather's first name, and my last name.

Mercy Jane is named in honor of my mother (Jane) and because Mercy just seemed to fit given the circumstances around her birth. I love the way they sound together and it just fits her so well. We do actually call her "Mercy Jane" more often than not.

Nathaniel Christopher is named after Justin's father. The name Christopher has a long history in his family.

Now that we know we're having girls this time, we're having a hard time coming up with names we like. We want to continue honoring loved ones so we have a few names in mind but we can't seem to put together two combinations of first and middle names that sound good together.
