I got food poisoning once too and it was awful!!!

If I see that date I throw it out, even though I know that date does not mean it will be bad that day. You cannot determine when an item will go bad.

I never eat anything past the expiration date. Even if its getting close I will throw it away! I think that it has an expiration date for a reason. DH thinks I'm silly but I don't care I refuse to feed my kids expired food like his mother.

It depends on what it is. If it's something like milk or eggs I will throw it out. Dried foods are a little different. If it passes the smell and taste test I will go ahead and cook it or keep it.

Nope. I've noticed most Europeans are more lax with stuff like food safety. "Raw" milk is legal here, they leave food out on the counter all night and sometimes eat it the next day without re-heating, eggs aren't refrigerated etc. I've sort of relaxed since living here. If the food looks/smells ok and it's just a couple days past we still eat it.

I'm so glad to hear I'm not alone.... When I lived with my MIL for 3 months she had things in her cupboards that had expired over 6 yrs previous!!! She thought I was crazy but I won't even use milk that expires tomorrow at 11 pm tonight... I know nothing 'magical' happens to make it bad that date, but I am way too grossed out to enjoy anything expired anyways

Same here. It always depends on what it is. Dairy and "animal" products (eggs, meat) I don't mess around with. Everything else is situational. I have a friend who is an expiration date nazi and she does a major clean out every few months and gives it all away. That I do not get - if she doesn't think it's safe to eat, why is it safe to give away?

OMG I know what you mean! When I went to stay with my Father a few months back he had cans in his cabinets from YEARS back, literally like 9 years. He also had chocolate milk powder that expired in 2000...13 years Dad?! Really?! I asked my brother how that even happens and he laughed. My Father is a truck driver and is rarely home. Two of my brothers love with him, 22 and 21 and they both work 2 jobs so they do not eat home so I guess that could be why, but how do you not notice something has been sitting there for years?! Needless to say, I might eat something a little past the date depending on what it is. But YEARS, even weeks, no thank you!
