Has anyone's child been referred to a cancer center over anemic lab results for blood work? I assumed Isabel's labs were anemic due to low iron or something and didn't realize until today that the "specialist" she is seeing tomorrow is a cancer center. The doctor won't tell me anything about the labs and said the specialist will explain them, so I don't even know if it's iron related. If it was, I could alter her diet to try to help with that. Why wouldn't she just tell me that? Is it just me or is it excessive to refer to a cancer center of anemic lab results? Has anyone else had that experience?

I used to test kids for their hemoglobins at WIC and I never have heard of that. I would assume they are trying to find the cause of anemia. Sometimes it is food but it can be other things too. I am always anemic because I have a leaky gut. My brother actually was diagnosed with Crohn's when he was a kid and the only reason they found it was because of a bad anemia result.

So no I am not trying to alarm you but I have never heard of that. It is probably nothing. Do you remember what her HMG was? 12 is normal. Sometimes they do things just rule it out. Yes it is annoying that they never tell you anything either.

No, they wouldn't tell me ANYTHING about the results, not even the levels. I assumed when they said "Anemic" that they meant her iron was low, but now I realize that low iron and anemia are not the same thing (Even though iron deficiency can CAUSE anemia). So I guess it makes a little more sense that they need us to see some kind of specialist, but I do wish they could have specified what kind of anemia. IE: She has anemia and her iron are low, so the two are most likely related, but we have to rule other things out to make the best treatment plan. Instead, I get: She has anemia. Me: Oh what is her iron low? Them: We will send the results to the specialist and he will explain it to you. Usually they are good about telling me SOMETHING on the phone and I feel like whatever reason they have for being vague this time just makes things worse. They couldn't just tell me if her iron was low?! I'm just frustrated. My mom has low iron sometimes and her regular doctor just told her to take iron supplements. I guess maybe it's different for kids. I don't know. I don't even know if it's iron. I'll find out tomorrow obviously but I would like to go in there with some idea of what to expect.
