While there has been research about depressed moms and the effects they can have on their infants (including crying and colic), a new study from Dutch researchers also finds a connection between depressed dads and newborns.

This is really interesting. I think people usually think of the moms when it comes to crying.

I'd be curious to know whether they studied how crying babies affected dads moods instead of the other way around. Having had 3 kids with colic I would venture to guess that all that crying could make anyone depressed. I know it was hard for me and I was less depressed with my kids who didn't cry all day long.

You could be right! I think sometimes these studies do not look at all of the variables.

I don't understand how anyone could make the claim that it is the depression of the dad that makes the baby cry, whereas the mom is depressed because the baby is crying.

How about babies crying makes the whole house depressed. Mom gets depressed which also causes dad to be depressed and vice versa.
