I agree whole-heartedly. My friend's potty-training autistic child has been sent home because of diarrhea numerous times. He's lactose-intolerant and loves to sneak cheese before school when she's tending to her other two.

I figured this was probably true. My kids aren't in day care so I have no idea what it is like but I know that parents can be paranoid about their kids being around other sick kids so I imagine that has something to do with it. But, this story makes a good point and maybe the daycare centers need to have some ways to deal with this.

Every school should have a sick policy (or well ness policy). Most policies state that fevers 101 and over need to go home until fever free for 24 hours, things like pink eye or strep have to be on antibiotics for 24 hours, 3 or more runny/loose stools need to return to normal for 24 hours before coming back, ring worm must be covered completely. To be completely honestly, the policy is in effect because sick children should be given 1 on 1, at school they can't get the one on one and personal TLC needed to get well. Kids who take a day off, get well sooner because they don't have an asult of germs on an already weakened immune system and they are able to get the rest and TLC to get better sooner as well.

Additionally, just because a child is exposed to the germs doesn't mean that they will get sick. But if you don't sent the child home, the time exposed is increased which means more likely to get sick for others. Now, things like common cold are just pick and choose battles - generally if the child isn't well enough to engage in daily routines and activities at school they need to stay home.

I don't want to discount the fact that parents need to be at work, and at the end of the day they are paying for a service. But the child care center is also a business and they need teachers healthy at work!
