King 5 news

After the discovery of fecal matter on the produce, store workers cleared the shelves of the produce that was left.
BELLEVUE, Wash. - A pile of fecal matter found on produce in a Bellevue Safeway store prompted store officials to close the section and clear the shelves Sunday night, tossing thousands of dollars worth of produce.

Store officials believe the incident happened between 7:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Sunday at the Evergreen Village Safeway.

"We immediately shut down our produce department, do a complete walk through and investigation," and removed produce from the section, said Cherie Myers, of Safeway Public Affairs.

KING 5's Ray Lane reports
Police say they are questioning a person in the incident, the same person who reported it to the store's manager.

Police found the suspect in nearby Highland Park with plenty of evidence.

"This was the person we were looking for based on the description of this person and the fact that he had some fecal matter on him as well," said Officer Tory Mangione, Bellevue Police Dept.

The suspect is described as a 23-year-old male transient from Seattle. Police believe he has mental problems.

Myers said customers who think their produce has been contaminated should put it in a plastic bag and bring it back to the store.
