I never really understood why ppl waited to cut the cord. But then I read an article ( I don't have ANY clue where...it was a cpl wks ago) that explained it to me. It said something along the lines of:

1/3 of the babies blood is in the cord while in utero. That's a lot of blood eh? Well, when baby comes out, a lot of ppl automatically cut the cord...cutting off 1/3 of babies blood volume!! That is a lot of blood to just all of a sudden be taken out of your body. I know when I get 4-5 vials of blood taken out of me *I* feel nauseas!! Poor baby
This is why they like to wait until the cord is done pulsing. All of babies blood gets into babies body for a full healthy supply

Oh, I also read somewhere ( I just remembered this) that some Dr.s believe giving baby back all the blood is best...but the way they do it is NOT good!! Some Dr.'s will squeeze the blood back into baby instead of letting the cord pulse until IT'S done doing it's job. When the OB squeezes the blood into the baby...it's not going at babys pace (just realized I can't distinguish babies from babys...sorry). The OB is pushing too much blood into the babys body too fast and it can cause heart problems. The babies heart can't handle that blood being forced through it's tiny heart!!

Anywhoo~~whatcha all think? I don't even know if this is a debate...LOL!!

I almost said in my birth plan to wait until the cord stopped pulsating. But then I read some other contradictive article about it, saying it was bad to wait, I forget why, but it convinced me that I really had no idea which was better, and I left it to the doctor to decide.

I found the reason I saw that confused me about whether or not to wait--- because the blood volume of the baby can get to high and it causes something really dangerous(according to what I read a while ago). But this article says the chances of that are pretty slim, so who knows?

Hrm...that didn't seem very "proven" (can't think of the right word to use)..didn't seem very "medically correct" to me. I dunno...I think it's far fetched that the baby would have too much blood. How can a baby get too much blood? It's their blood... the only reason it's in the umbilica cord and not their body is because they cord has to get the blood from the placenta... hrm...

The blood that is in the umbilical cord is in addition to the normal blood volume that a baby has. I can't explain what I'm trying to say

When you all know please inform me. I am trying to decide what I want to do myself.

If we don't have an answer by July 7th, I will repost after I speak with my Dr. about it.

I don't get it...

the baby is done with the placenta when he/she comes out. He/she is making their own blood and controlling their own circulation by then - the placenta becomes vestigial. Why is it so important that a doctor wait or not?

This is the first I have heard of this. The doctors just did their thing when I delivered... I have no idea how long it was left before cutting it... not long I don't think but my baby is fine.

I also have no idea how long it was before they cut the cord.
To be honest, I think it's very much "in" right now to mistrust doctors. I think it's very sad that some people feel this way, I completely trust my doctor.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for informing ourselves. But I don't think the Internet is the best place to do that. It's a wonderful source of information, but it's also a wonderful source of misinformation and most of us don't have the medical knowledge to adequately distinguish between the two. Aren't there enough decisions to be made, enough anxiety and questions without adding the precise time to cut the cord? Can't we at least trust our doctors to know this one and do what's right?

I completely, totally, 100% agree with this statement.
