Question for a Friend...

Hey Ladies,

I am in the March 2011 Playroom, but had my guy in January. Luckily, he has gained weight well and is actually on his "actual age" charts at 9 months...which is great considering he was a 32 weeker.

Anyway, we have some NICU buddies who we have kept in touch with and have play dates with. The boy is a 31 weeker and has not done as well in the weight department. He is 12 lbs and has been at that weight for about 5 weeks. Right now, he has Neosure formula and only eat 20-23 ounces per day. He has started solids but has troubles with the mechanics and doesn't really seem interested in eating. He doesn't really mouth toys either. They are still waking him up at night for a feed. He takes anywhere from 1-4 ounces at each feeding.

I am still pumping and have a ton of frozen milk. I have offered mom some and she will be using to mix in with solids. Feeding specialist says not to give any milk as bottles because if he prefers that then he won't eat when we run out of frozen.

Also, no signs of reflux. He was on prevacid for a while, but no real difference.

Anyway, just wondering if any of you have any ideas or advice that I can give to my friend.

Thanks in Advance!

Re: Question for a Friend...

Hmmm...I would see if they would send him to a speech/feeding specialist. Danny had to go see one at one point to make sure that he hadn't developed any "mechanical" issues in regards to eating when he stopped eating *literally* overnight. Has he always eaten that amount or has he slowed his intake recently? What calorie level is his formula? 30 cal/oz is typical with children having difficulty gaining weight. He ideally should be eating 30 ounces of formula in a 24 hour period (if he doesn't eat any solids). How old is the baby and what has his weight pattern been up to this point? If he has always had ups, downs, and flats, I think it would be time for a GI evaluation with a stool culture to check for fecal fat, elastase, and to check for any irritation. That is the most non-invasive first step. :/

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you on this one. Danny is still a royal mess and a medical mystery. We have upcoming surgery and ongoing illnesses so I am in and out. ;)
