You can take or leave these as they work for you, but in my time talking to those beginning to meditate these tips tend to begin to answer some of the questions people have.
1. You do not have to be sat up to meditate. Make yourself comfy! It's important that you are.
2. You do not have to meditate in silence, silence can be hard to focus with at first, try your favorite music, or even download music to meditate by.
3. Emptying your head can be hard, start off in small doses (10-15 minutes) practicing with visualisation techniques i.e. Put all your thoughts into boxes and put them away etc
4. Use breathing techniques to help you relax, breathe in for 5, out for 5, then go up to 10, this will help slow your heart rate a little and allow you to relax.
5. Try to meditate in an area with no distractions, no TV, no computer etc. Even the impulses given off can be distracting for people.
6. Bright lighting can detract from your focus, turn the lights down low, maybe light some candles.
7. You don't HAVE to close your eyes. Do whatever feels natural to you, focus on one fixed point in the room, close them or whatever else is comfy.
8. Remember to be safe! Don't try to learn to meditate in the bath, once you enter a trance state that could be very dangerous!
9. Incense can help, scents like lavendar can help you to relax if you struggle with relaxation. By the same token, so can essential oils.
10. People have often said they don't know what to do with their hands or arms, feel free to hold something you love, something soft or comforting to aid with relaxation if you feel it will help, otherwise find a more comfortable position.
Remember: Meditation can take years to perfect, so be patient and kind to yourself, take it in small steps and don't rush yourself. It's YOUR meditation journey, no one elses!
