Hospital stuff

I have NO reason to think I may get transferred to a hospital instead of getting my home birth however my VERY diligent DH wants to still make sure the what ifs are planned out. So with that said....
Do you still have to preregister at the hospital even with a home birth? (did you)
Do you still do a birth plan for the hospital?
I will have a emergency bag packed and 3 copies of the driving route to get there (for us/ midwife/ assistant).
What things am I not thinking of that I may need to do as far as possible transfer needed.

I didn't preregister. I knew if it was going to happen, they'd have to take me. I also felt if I did, I was setting myself up for it happening. I had fought so hard for my HBAC with doctors and i didn't even want to go near the hospital to even thing of the "just incase". We had a plan in case something did happen though.

I didn't have a birth plan at all this time because last time I did, they went against it. I also figured if I were to transfer (keep in mind, this is my personal case) that it would more than likely end up in another c-section so a birth plan would have been pointless for me. If you feel comfortable having one, go for it. But I'm not sure how much they'd follow it in a transfer situation.

JMO, I wouldn't even bother to pre-register since if you are being transferred they will have to take you anyways. As for a birth plan, I think that's a personal opinion. I will have a birth plan in hand just in case I am transferred; but like Marisa said, if I'm transferred, I most likely will end up with another c-section. My birth plan will be based on the idea that if I'm transferred it's going to be for a c-section.

Re: Hospital stuff

I figure if I'm transferred it will be due to needing a c/s. The ONLY reason I am thinking of doing a birth plan is more so to avoid Vit K, eye drops and Hep B vaccine while there. Since I would be out (because I can't have an epidural I would need to be knocked out)...I'm nervous they would try crap before I wake up. I don't know how DH would do on his own.
And I'm not worried about them taking me....more wondering how much time (if any) would I waste trying to answer stupid questions.

Just wanted to throw in my two cents since I just went through it...

I will tell you that their pretty presisent about the heb b and vita k shot and eye antibotic, we had to fight the nurse a little bit and then the ped doing the rounds the next day.. so even though its on a birth plan you should make sure your dh is ready to go to bat over this. But other than that, they are pretty easy when you transfer so I would say pre-registering is a waste.

Re: Hospital stuff

I'm not preregistering.

I just wanted to share. I mentioned to my midwife that if we ended up at the close (emergency) hospital, it would most likely only be for a C/S, and she told me I might be surprised. Sometimes they transfer for something that for a homebirth midwife is emergent - like a fetal heartrate in the 60s-70s and not recovering between contractions and the hospital will be like, "We can just watch this for a little bit" and mom goes on to have a vaginal birth. Her saying that many of her emergency transfers (and she only has 1-2 a year) still end in a vaginal (and often natural) birth changed my perspective on my birth plan in case of transfer.

It's one of those things. Like getting around Murphy's Law - if you do the full on transfer birth plan, then you will probably never need it. At least that's my philosophy. :D

My midwifes transfer rate was low and her c-sections were lower than her vaginal when it came to transfers. I know that if I had to transfer it would have ended in another c-section. When I went in for bleeding I was lectured left and right by hospital staff because I had chosen to plan an HBAC and they made me feel as if I were stupid for attempting.

So yeah, a lot of it depends on what exactly is going on and why the reasoning for a transfer. Just like Dag she transferred and Corbin was born vaginally :)

Re: Hospital stuff

Didn't pre-register at any hospital.
Had directions printed out for the two hospitals, one for emergency transport and other is were back up OB was incase of nonemergency transport.
Had a birth plan printed out for baby specifics: NOs to circum, vaccines, vitamin k, PKU.
But if we were transfered, our MW would have gone as well taking role as doula and advocate as well :)
Had bags packed and in car as well.
Good luck Angela! Can't wait! You are getting sooo close!

We don't have to pre-register here.

But, if I was you, I would have a birth plan just in case, really, what would be in it is the after care, not so much the care in labour.

Good luck!
