state laws?

Does anyone know how I can find the state laws regaurding the eye goop, hep B vax and the Vit K shot? I know there is a law that says a baby cannot be released from the hospital without these things, but I am trying to find out what the homebirth options are. I don't mind the Vit. K shot (as both my other 2 actually needed it) but the Hep B and the eye goop is kind of stupid IMHO. I am going to ask my m/w about it next week, but I just wanted to see if I could research it a bit. But I don't know where to start.

I just did a quick google search and it looks like you can opt out of the Vitamin K and Hep B... I'll see if I can find any info on the eye goop. But I think your best bet is going to be to ask your midwife what her recommendations are, in what instances she would do these procedures and what the laws are. Then that way you can make the best decision for your family!

I agree...asking your midwife will be the easiest way to find out.

Re: state laws?

Most homebirthers do not do these things, so your midwife will probably be able to let you know. They are not mandatory anywhere but New York. They're practically mandatory, in that hospitals may tell you you have to, and may even do without consent because they're so used to it, but they are NOT. It is mandatory that they offer/try to get you to. Not that you actually have to have it done.

Even in NY, most HB midwives won't even blink about you refusing vit k and hep b. one of the many benefits of birthing at home is having control over if/when newborn procedures take place.
