With my last birth I had a hospital birth, and without all the details lets just say I am traumatized.
I am due in September and I desperately want to have a homebirth.
The only midwife around that would do a homebirth is charging $4,000 and I do not have that kind of money to spend. Do you ladies have any advice on how to go about asking family for help with the costs, without sounding like I am trying to mooch? The only person in my family on my side who would be able to help is my Aunt, who is almost 60 and has never had any children of her own... DHs side could probably chip in too... I just don't know how to go about asking for this kind of money...
All of our expenses are going towards a bigger car, things the baby will need, a new house, birthdays and the holidays following the baby's birth.
Re: Need advice...
We have had a welcoming shower with some of our babies and when we were asked what we needed, we honestly replied, "Money." We never got thousands of dollars but we have received a couple hundred (which was extremly helpful).
Our midwives also work on a trade system or take payments as we can make them. Would your midwife do that? Take a trade or monthly payments?
Re: Need advice...
Honestly, $4000 doesn't sound unreasonable. Our midwife charges about $2500 for a homebirth and $3200+ for a birth center birth. Depending on your area, of course. Does your midwife work with a billing company? Cause you can always work out a payment plan. Ours gives a % discount for paying in full before 32 weeks, could you get a deal like that?
Have you weighed out your insurance costs versus a homebirth? If we had to pay through insurance, it would be a $5000 deductible plus 20%, versus the midwife fees out of pocket. No brainer, the midwife is cheaper. Of course that assumes everything goes according to plan.
If having a homebirth is a priority to you, and not just a fun and exciting new option, then you need to prioritize your spending to match. Our payment plan was about $400/mo and we just happened to pay off our car which was about the same, so it worked out.
