Home birth Myths

What are some home birth myths that you heard prior to having a home birth?

That it would be messy. Nope! Midwives had a trash can set up - one for laundry and one for trash. They left everything spotless!

I haven't really heard anything directly related to homebirth except the "What if there's an emergency? *gasp*" thing...

Mostly all that fun natural childbirth stuff like "I would have DIED if I didn't have forceps and was in a hospital!" stuff..... I just smile and nod ;)

that it is unsafe or reckless, i think that is the most common misconception, at least for my friends and family, it comes from a well meaning place but its just not true for women with low risk pregnancies

I heard a lot of messy comments or why be a hero. Mostly geared towards the unmediated side of things.

I, surprisingly, get this one often: "So do you get any pain medication? Epidurals or anything?"

Well gee.... let me think about that....

I also get the: "My child and I would have died if it weren't for me being in the hospital!" And I, like Jackie, always nod and keep my mouth shut. lol

I surprisingly didn't get asked about pain meds. That's pretty funny!
