Intro and question

Hi I'm Amber, we are planning our first home birth 6th baby.

How was your glucose test done if you took one?

I've been seeing midwives in a hospital and now I'm switching to a home birth midwife. My hospital midwives wanted me to take a GTT at 16 weeks but I declined so they wanted some sugars at home for a couple of weeks. I took a trial test at home (done by me to check where I'm at) no asked for it but aftera protien lunch I waited two hours and then ate 80g of M&Ms (to equal 50g of sugar like the glucola) per-M&Ms blood sugar was 74, 1 hour after it was 112, and two hours after it was 84. So my thinking is most likely I don't have GD I will be doing a simialar test after a protien breakfast tomorrow with 10oz of purple grape juice to check again but have any of you done the glucose test with grape juice or something simialar?

Re: Intro and question

First Welcome to the board! Its great to have a new face around here!

With my first hb we did a breakfast. 2 eggs, 2 pieces of toast, 8oz milk and 8oz OJ. My 2nd homebirth we just did some base sugars and watched my urine.

We just watch my urine, I've never done the tests w/ any of the pregnancies. A lot of women do what you're doing though and eat something (it varies with each person) and then do the test :)

Re: Intro and question

I didn't do any test this time - my eating habits are way different now than they used to be though. I only eat whole foods and practically no outside sugars. (No juice either). My midwife never even asked about it but she was checking my urine so I assume if there was some sign she would have mentioned it. Honestly I think all these tests can cause more stress/damage. If there is an indication that something is amiss then go ahead and test - but all this pre-emptive testing, I think, is reinforcing the mental state of pregnancy being an illness that must be controlled and fixed.Haha - this is one of my soap box topics!Bottom line is that each woman has the right to choose what feels right to her - if testing for certain things eases your mind then definitely do it!
