Did anyone buy a kit for homebirth or emergency childbirth? Where did you find it, and what does it absolutely HAVE to include? I am new to this, so if there are any BTDT UCers or homebirthers, please let me in on this! I want to get the best that I can for my money, without having to buy several kits just to get together all the things that I need. Is it best to just buy the things individually?
I bought everything individually.
Things we needed were::
pads for me
towels and washcloths
iodine didn't use it
alcohol didn't use it
cotton balls didn't use it
bulb syringe didn't use it at birth
blue absorbent pads I couldn't find them so we didn't have any
What about scissors or a cord clamp? Or did a MW provide those things for you?
She had those.
I didn't have an emergency kit. Whenever I was 36 weeks I went out and got these things(bought or gathered from around the house and put into one centeral location):
2 Shower curtains (and two fitted sheets for the bed)
2 table cloths
Peroxide (for splatters of blood and what not)
12 or so recieving blankets
a pot for boiling water
We used everything. The space heater warmed the room for the baby's arrival. We also used it for awhile after too. The hot water bottle was for her because her temp. was low. We wrapped it up in a blanket and put it next her back (herfront was to me). The table cloths and shower curtains were life savers. We only used one shower curtain though. I gave birth on the floor....so we had set up two locations. Peroxide was a life saver!!! I also had sea salt at home that I used to wash all the sheets, blankets, and pillow cases that got blood on them. NOTHING was stained. The sea salt and peroxide worked perfectly.
The washcloths were used for the pernial area when I was crowning. That was ESSENTIAL!! It felt sooo good during the ring of fire.
Recieving blankets were used instead of towels because they're softer.
humm... the flashlight was so the midwife could look for tears....
Well I guess that's about it.
The midwife bought everything else.
For our UC I ordered a lot of stuff...and used a handful of items. :)
*Towels for baby
*wash cloths for my bottom when the baby was crowning
*oil for crockpot
*Big bowl for the placenta
*Shepard's purse and Angelica
*Big pads for me
*lots of blue chux pads
*plastic sheet for the floor where we made my nest with blankets and stuff on top.
That is all we needed.
Since I'm UCing I have to buy everything on my own. I guess I could buy a kit (they have them for relatively inexpensive at inhishands.com) but I've read that lots of stuff goes unused. I have a list, it's all pretty self explanitory but I have the uses labeled for my DH:

Some or all of this may go unused, who knows... I have all of my herbal stuff already here, stored in a rubbermade bin and waiting.
I had this formatted all pretty but it didn't hold, so I'm very sorry if it's difficult to read.
