So for those BTDT HBers, what was in your birth kit that you couldn't live without? Anything you really didn't need? Any insider tips?

For instance, in the hospital, I really didn't need the 10 pairs of granny panties i bought, LOL!

i can't WAIT for the responses on this one, I'd love a great list so I know for the future

what did you have that you loved, and what could you have lived without?

I don't know! My midwife brings the birthkit with everything I need...and I can't think of anything I couldn't live without or anything I wished I'd had. I mean, at home I have access to pretty much anything I might want!

The only things we used were the vinyl tablecloth, towels, ky, gauze pads, and rubber gloves. I had hospital maternity pads and granny panties. Honestly, I only used 1 of the hospital pads because they aggravate the daylights out of me. Rest of the time I bought off brand pads.

My MW made me an herbal packet that they boiled into a tea while I was in labor. Then, they spooned them onto regular maxi pads & froze them for me to use in the few days postpartum. Talk about heaven!!!! It also speeds healing, which was just the icing on the cake!

We used the vinyl tablecloths, peroxide (mostly for cleaning a spot of blood off the carpet lol), chux pads, the birth tub!!!, and thats about it. I mean, except for the regular medical stuff like gloves, lubricant, perineal massage oil, etc. Oh - and orange juice. It was like a drink of HEAVEN after the birth! lol. Speaking of which, a really big jug for drinking out of during labor came in handy - it was 76 ozs or so and it was a good size, I could hold it, and it lasted me long enough that i didnt have to wait for refills ;)

We could have used a pump for the birth tub - we forgot to buy one, and my Dh ended up having to bucket the water out by hand :( lol Poor guy. I think that traumatized him (i delivered the placenta in the pool so it wasnt a pretty sight! lol).

The MW also brought some homeopaths like Arnica which really seemed to help as well.

What could we have done without? Hmm... not sure. We never used the suction bulb (baby didnt need it), or the birth stool. But they were nice to have around just in case.

I totally lied! There WAS something I couldn't live without!

MY BIRTHPOOL! Ahhhhhhh, nice hot/warm water to relax in.......heavenly!

I labored in our tub and it got to where it was killing my back. I had back labor too so that did NOT help.

Oh lala, super hubby! Poor guy, my man passed out at the first birth, so I think something like that would DO HIM IN! Thank god I'm using the midwifes tub, she's cleaning it!!

Oh yeah, I can't sit in our tub these days without everything hurting. When we were planning our first homebirth, I asked the midwife if we could just do the waterbirth in our tub. She said, "OH GOSH NO! You don't want to give birth in there, you'll be so sore!" So we bought the pool she reccommends - sturdy inflatable sides (strong enough for me to lean all my weight on) AND a big fat inflated bottom. It felt like I was sitting on a cloud. Best $38 I ever spent! Hmmmmm, maybe I should blow it up today for a trial run.... LOL

We bought this one (the smaller one):

LOL... if you only kenw my DH. He gags when babies drool the man has such a weak stomach! lol. I thought for sure hed pass out. But, he stayed in front of me for the birth (i was on my knees leaning over the tub). Then, afterwards, when he was cleaning out the birth tub, he looked like he was in a transe. lol. I asked him if he was ok, and he wouldnt even speak. It took him a while to get over that part lol.

My midwife wants me to provide

A box lined with paper for waste

A torch to check my vagina/anus

soap and a hand towel

Old towels for me

Water proof sheets or whatever in case I deliver on the bed

The rest she provides for me,even gas and air :) I LOVE gas and air and it is not considered a drug and it works wonders for me.

Ive packed a bag just in the event I need to be took by ambulance,I have FAST labours and my midwife is coming round to write a map for everyone as im on high alert-must get round ASAP once I call or could give birth on my own or need an ambulance as it takes midwife 30 mins to get here but need to call 999 if I think I need to push and midwife not yet here.

Ill also pack a bag for my boys for babysitters.

Ill make sure I have lots of snacks and refreshments for the midwife and partner and I am thinking of getting a birth ball and pool.
