For those of you with older kids....

Who will be watching your kids for you when you go into labor? I don't have anyone close by that I can count on to watch the kids for me. My parents will come down, but they are a 16 hour drive away. I am going to start interviewing sitters for the kids, but it will be hard because we live on base. The sitter would have to have base access, and be willing to come to my house. Either that or the sitter would have to have a big enough vehicle to drive the kids back and forth to school, and be ok with us dropping the kids off when I go into labor. I don't have any close friends here that I would want to ask to watch the kids, so I am just going to see if I can line up a few sitters.

My mom would be my ideal person, but she babysits my brother's kids because he and my SIL both work full time. We asked my grandmother to do it. Her and Kelly are very close. She will also be staying after Tristan goes back to work since I'll need help with getting Kelly to and from school (she'll be in first grade).

We have some friends that will be keeping DD since all of our family live states away.

Care.com is supposed to be great for finding sitters, I have never used it, but I know people that have and swear by it.

I have 3 older boys(they will be 18, 15, and 14 when the baby is born), and they will run things while I'm in the hospital.

I am hoping one of our friends will mind them for us. My eldest child's best friends mum and dad know our kids really well and the mum actually has playdates with my youngest daughter (she has no girls) so all three will be comfortable there. One of my dogs will be a problem though lol. As we are planning a home birth I know she will be too nervous to see me in pain. We'll have to get her, her own doggy sitter.

Re: For those of you with older kids....

I haven't decided. I've felt a little stressed over it honestly, mostly because a lot of things depend on what time of day i go into labor. If its at night i'd most definitely want someone to come over to my house. My mom is my first thought but she's expressed that she doesn't feel comfortable watching him at our house because she's a homebody and likes being home. I find it annoying but it just means she doesn't watch him often. Now that she has two little foster girls to watch it seem even less likely. If i want to bring him over to their house i'm not completely sure he'd get the attention or they'd watch him as well as i'd like. I trust one of my sisters 100% but she doesn't have a car and is a full time college student so she may be able to help but a lot depends on that as well. My MIL would be willing to come to our house to watch him if necessary so i might have to go with that option even though she's not my first choice as she's not used to watching little ones and honestly we rarely see her nowadays. I'm overly protective of him so i know this is the biggest reason i'm having a hard time with this. I'm always the one who takes care of him except in rare cases when we decide to go on a date. And then how will we bring him to meet the baby after? The birthing center is 45 min away so it seems like a lot to have DH drive all the way back to pick him up and bring him over. And then i assume anyone watching him will want to come as well. Guess i have a lot to think about still. *sigh*

It sounds like in your case finding a sitter is your best option. I'm sure if you interview people, get to see how they interact with your kids, and get them used to this particular sitter then you'll be that much more comfortable when the time comes.

Re: For those of you with older kids....

Well since I am going to be having weekly appointments starting on Monday then I figure I can use a sitter for those, and since the kids will be home for the summer then they would all get to have a chance to get use to the new sitter. I just hate how much people want to charge to watch them for only a few hours. I can't even imagine how much we are going to have to pay for a sitter to watch them while I am in labor. I am also trying to convince my mom to come down at the end of July to stay until I have the baby. I am not sure if she will go for it, but I would rather pay for her to come down than pay a sitter a crazy amount to watch my kids.

Re: For those of you with older kids....

With DD #2, I felt like we had almost no options. We were fairly new to the area and didn't know anyone that well. I ended up being induced so we were able to plan having my mother come to town.

This time, I have a few possibilities. My brother and his wife live five minutes away. Truly, they aren't my first choice, but I know they would do it. I have two neighbors across the street who could take the girls for a few hours if needed (I'm assuming my mom would drive over, but she's three hours away, so if things went quickly...) and I have a girlfriend who has daughters the same age as mine who could take them. If, for some reason, my mom wasn't able to come spend the nights, I would send DH home to sleep (assuming we're not talking about a baby born overnight) so he would pick up the girls from wherever they were and bring them to visit the next day.

I still don't know yet. Our oldest dd is 15 and we don't have any babies so I was thinking maybe she could, but I'm not convinced on her watching them overnight. I just don't know yet.

Re: For those of you with older kids....

I have no idea.

Our family lives in a different state (about 23hours by car). I don't have any close friends in this area as we just moved here from that other state. I do have a grandma who lives about 3 hours from here, but she is almost 80 and my son does not know her well. He is really touchy about strangers and has anxiety issues. I think it could be too stressful on both of them.

I'm about to just do it alone and let my husband stay home with our son.

That would be ideal then if you could get your mom to come! Good luck convincing her!

Like Keira'smom, I have older boys who will run things while I"m gone. My oldest two boys will be 17 and almost 15 when the baby is born so they will probably stay with their siblings while I'm in labor. Depending on what time I deliver, DH may come back to check on them that day and spend some time with them before coming back to the hospital or if I deliver at night then he'll probably just come home early in the morning. Not sure if Dh will spend the second night at the hospital or not, I guess it depends on how things go the first night at home.

Re: For those of you with older kids....

My in-laws live 5 minutes away. When I went into labor with DD2 it was the middle of the night, but they got there in about 15 minutes. I imagine we'll ask them again. I also have a friend in the neighborhood that I know will help out, but she works full-time so would only be available in middle of the night scenario until IL's arrived or the weekend.

If my step-daughter is with us when it's baby time we'll just take her to her mom's. There is some silver-lining to custody arrangements hehe :)

Re: For those of you with older kids....

Thanks for reminding as we have to still work on this:smile: . My parents / in laws live very far away and wont be here at the time baby comes . I have an aunt who may come if possible for her at that exact time . I am planning to talk to a family friend who also works as a baby sitter . They are our best bet .
